Canadians will not buy only EV's in the future. Are our governments watching?

The cheapest new car you can get in Canada is a Nissan piece of shit for ~22k, a BYD vehicle without tariffs is probably around 14k.
I am afraid EV imports from China without tariffs would be a hard sell
to our leaders.

Trudeau announces 100% tariff on Chinese EVs, signals more measures coming

100% agree - that’s why we’re installing solar. It allows us to help control our costs.
This is what convinces me EV will be a gadget mainly for the affluent
in the future.

It is great to be the owner of a detached house with a driveway when
rental accommodation are increasingly unaffordable for so many young
people today. Even people who live comfortably in an apartment
they own will have a tough time to upgrade to a upper-end condo with
EV charger installation. Buying a house so you can install rooftop solar
panels to control fuel cost will likely become a luxury in the near future
to most of the people who are in the early stage of their career.

I am sure EV will be in demand into the future. Even with only a 10--15% of the
population devoted to virtue-signaling the market for EV will still be a juicy
one for EV exporters in China. But I don't see why we would want to make
expensive toys for the rich cheaper. As such I am on the side of Trudeau and
Ford to support the 100% tariff on Chinese EV imports.

We can agree to disagree on the future of EVs, or whether or not solar panels are a good idea or not. But you say "who I am I to judge", and then accuse me of virtue signalling. I don't give a fuck about trying to impress anyone. My decisions have been purely economic in nature. It may turn out that I've made a poor bet, but I'm not going to pay 1 cent more to try and look like I'm some kind of eco-warrior, which I'm not.

solar panels and wind turbines were actually a very bad idea as they fooled a lot of people into thinking there was a replacement for fossil fuels
they are not , not even close

But you say "who I am I to judge", and then accuse me of virtue signalling.
you saw that did you

I don't give a fuck about trying to impress anyone.

then why mention it at all ?
My decisions have been purely economic in nature.

they make zero sense economically

It may turn out that I've made a poor bet,
there is a difference between making a sound economic decision and making a bet
if you want to bet go to Vegas

but I'm not going to pay 1 cent more to try and look like I'm some kind of eco-warrior, which I'm not.
1 cent more ?
this implies you have already spent money to try and look like you are some kind of eco-warrior

but hey, who are we to judge if you want to invest in roof top virtual signaling

i am just messing with you, please enjoy your solar panels.
i am sure they will give you lots of immense pride for discussion at dinner parties

John is mentally retarded, pay him no attention.
Yeah, I was offering my opinion in what I thought was a open discussion. I'm not interested in engaging in an argument and defending my choices. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything.

Some of us like charging our cars like smartphones. 99% of the time it's WAY more convenient that having to stop at a gas pump. I park in my garage and I start every day with a full "tank". I can start the climate control on a cold day and let it run for up to an hour in my garage, and never have to worry about killing everyone in the house with carbon monoxide poisoning. There are lot of ways the EVs are superior to ICEs, which isn't to say there aren't any downsides. In life there are always tradeoffs. But to paint everything with the same brush doesn't make much sense.

(a) I was paying $250-$300 for gas. My EV charger tracks my energy use and cost based on time-of-use. Nov was $55.36, Dec was $47.91, Jan is $9.40 (so far). Before you tell me that I overpaid for the car, my lease is $50 per month more than my last car, and the new one is superior in every way.
(b) I do not and would not drive a Tesla.

Chinese EVs are coming to Canada soon.

If you are thinking about driving long distance or across Canada. You need to plan when and where to charge your car.

I don't recommend driving in the winter but the Chinese EVs might have resolve their issue with winter temperature.

stay away from EVs unless you want to buy a specializeed battery every year in the winter.
If that were true, GM would have to buy me a new battery every year since the battery is under warranty for 8-years / 160,000 km. I won't have the car for even half that time.

If I were doing a lot of cross country driving, I probably wouldn't have bought an EV. I'd wait for better infrastructure and faster charging battery technology to arrive. But for the handful of road trips I do each year, the savings are worth a little bit of inconvenience. Plus I have the regular convenience of not having to stop for gas 95% of the time.
