Global oil economics and the geopolitics that inevitably go along with them are very messy business. Putting the U.S.-Canada trade issues aside for a moment, we are seeing global trade in general is messy business. Doesn't matter if it involves China, Europe, South America, etc. Everywhere (and I mean everywhere) producers are looking for advantages whether that be resources, cheap labor and just as importantly consumer markets.

I don't think anyone knows what U.S. oil producers will do in Venezuela in the future. I suspect Venezuela will have some say and they will do business with companies that commit to certain production levels.

Getting back to the messy business of oil, the future of Canadian oil production will always be volatile Venezuela or no Venezuela. A commonly shared perspective is that the oil price crash of 2015 took down Harper's government. Expanding Alberta oil production and distribution is a good thing, but it will always be a very cyclical, bumpy ride.

The most idiotic part of this is that oil needs to stay in the ground for climate change.
China is leading the solar and renewable revolution, solar is going in everywhere and Egypt just opened a plant to make cells.
South America, Africa and India are all going solar so oil prices keep dropping.

When oil gets low enough Putin, MBS and america are screwed.

Using up the last of your country's cash to steal the dirtiest of oil from a poor South American country is evil and really bad business.

More like the illegitimate head of gov't who is an enemy and a tyrant of the United States and western democracy.
Where do you get that info? Whatever Trump says is a lie. Everything.

Will we ever know the truth? Where does the media get its info? If they do not support capture, they are called commies.

As explained in that video, Vz moved to nationalize their oil as a state resource and ALL companies aroudn the world re-prioritized. Vz paid a fair price at the time for waht was nationalized.

The US companies with heavy oil experience moved to Canada. They are heavily invested in Canada and are not likely to go back to an unstable Vz and start fresh with a lunatic Trump and in the post-Lunatic Trump era that will certainly follow. It would take 10 years of heavy construction in a stable, non-corrupt, jurisdiction to built infrastructre to begin production. That's why Vz and Russia are fucked in terms of US and western investment. China may step up for political influence but as others have said, China sees a future in renewables.

Trump, a marketer and branding guy who hasn''t built anything physical in decades is simply not capable of understanding the intricacies of pioneering a fresh oil industry in a country he has never even been to... and considers a shit hole of vile people. Either Putin, MIller or whomever had his ear last was the one who got him to green light this Vz fiasco in the making.

Why an enemy?
Because he dared try to nationalize Venezuela's oil?
Venezuela nationalized its oil resources 60+ years ago. And it nationalized ALL foreign oil company infrastructure prob 30 years ago. With what was then fair compensation. This applied to ALL companies.

So did Saudi, Mexico and tons of other countries.

The oil business is so complex that it takes a lifetime and continuous updating to know what it's really about.

That's why I know @oil&gas is so full of shit on so many other things.

Good thing trump and his team are experts in everything, but especially oil.

All that is true, but I'm not as pessimistic about Venezuela's future post-Maduro. I also don't think Venezuela's oil production has to necessarily be stuck where it is today.

If we read between the lines, Rubio is focusing more on the people. Trump is focused on the oil. When Trump speaks, it always brings out the knifes. It's easy because he doesn't think or speak like a diplomat.

In the case of ConocoPhillips, an international arbitration tribunal in 2019 “unanimously ordered the government of Venezuela to pay the company $8.7 billion in compensation for the government’s unlawful expropriation of ConocoPhillips’ investments in Venezuela in 2007, plus interest,” and Reuters has more recently put the total sum the company is seeking at around $12 billion.

That sum should be paid. But 12B isn't a large amount by today's standards.

It's infinitely below Trump's demand that all oil be sold to the USA and managed by him personally and his buddies (of course. Because that's why he did this.)

It's actually because he always blatantly tried to grift $$$$ for himself in whatever he does. All the deals he tries to force on Zelensky are financially exploitative as well. And he keeps talking about the Trump theme park that he wants to build in Gaza as a reward for "stopping" that war.
