Probably the same reason folks go to McD’s instead of a local restaurant. Easy, no research needed, better marketing than independents. Not surprising in today’s world.

Some of us - *raises hand* - aren't looking for all the services that are generally available from an independent provider. Some of us - *raises hand* - are actually looking for an erotic massage, and the most straightforward place to find that is a massage parlour. Not saying that there aren't independents who can deliver that, but it's often not their primary offering. I've also never had any privacy concerns walking into a spa.
Spa's are pretty well safer for both parties involved. The risk of getting robbed at a spa are pretty much nil. Not to mention, if scheduling gets fucked up, there is almost always a backup.
I've walked into hotels questioning if I should be there. Ive read a number of stories of guys waiting in bathrooms while the providers take the cash and threaten the "hobbyist".
