Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on 31 July for NATO and the west to effect regime change in Russia. His remarks came after Moscow launched missile and drone strikes targeting Kiev, killing 26, including three children, while injuring 150 more.
“But if the world doesn't aim to change the regime in Russia, that means even after the war ends, Moscow will still try to destabilize neighboring countries,” Zelensky said while addressing a conference marking the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Accords.
Ukrainian sources reported that Russia launched at least 300 drones and eight cruise missiles at Ukraine overnight on Thursday, with most targeting the capital, including a nine-story residential building in the Sviatoshynsky district.
At least 16 children were among those injured.
Trump condemned the Russian strikes on Friday, saying, “Russia – I think it's disgusting what they're doing.”
Trump vowed to impose additional sanctions on Moscow while acknowledging they may have little effect.
“I think what Russia's doing is very sad. A lot of Russians are dying,” he added.
Trump had previously set a 50-day deadline for Russia to end the war. Earlier this week, he reduced it to 10 days, giving Russian President Vladimir Putin until 8 August to comply.
However, Putin dismissed US pressure for a ceasefire on Friday, stating that “disappointments arise from excessive expectations.”
Putin made the comments while in Belarus for meetings with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
Zelensky's call for regime change in Moscow comes days after Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) revealed that US and British officials recently held a meeting in the Alps with top Ukrainian officials to discuss “replacing” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to a statement made available to Russian news agency TASS, the meeting involved Andrey Yermak, head of the Ukrainian president's office, Kirill Budanov, chief of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's Main Directorate of Intelligence, and Valery Zaluzhny, the country's ex-commander-in-chief who is now Ukraine's ambassador to London.
“The Americans and the British announced their decision to propose Zaluzhny to the Ukrainian presidency. Yermak and Budanov ‘snapped a salute,’ while securing promises from the Anglo-Saxons to let them keep their present positions, as well as to take their interests into account in the course of making decisions over other personnel issues,” TASS reports.
