The business model for your average run of the mIll spa, particularly outside of Toronto , is not sustainable nor viable long term.. Rent itself, even in Oshawa can be upwards of $4000 per month
. Room fees are supposed to be profit shared with the employees , and on average , 30/45/60 minutes results in cost sharing of $10/$20/$30 for the masseuse . In some joints , the masseuse gets nothing from the house for a 30 minutes sessions. These rates are rather pathetic , and of course do nothing to attract optimal employees . But I blame the customers for that . Too many cheap assed chintzy dudes trying to squeeze the max services for the least amount of cash. So ya get what you pay for. It’s a bit demeaning and undignified towards the ladies struggling to make a buck , but that’s where we are as a community , unfortunately.
Typically , there are on average , about 10 of these places up for sale at any given time , looking for new owners . It seems that many are functioning mainly as tax write offs and/or money laundering operations. A few , that I’m familiar with, are owned by ladies in their 70’s who are essentially retired , but just looking for a regular, low key stream of pocket change spending money .
