I could tell you why but I think, if you truely want a sincere answer, you'd be better served going to the district's that voted the most for Trump and ask the Americans who voted for him themselves.

I know a few people in the U.S, who idolize him, just like some people do to Poilievre.
Credit where it's due, Trump is charismatic, at least with his base. Poilievre, on the other hand, has no presence and no charisma. He appears confident in his ads, when he's talking to his base or when being interviewed by Rebel News, but he looked like a wet noddle at last night's debate, where he had no control over his environment.

I'm an American. I grew up down south in Arkansas. I just visited last week with my relatives. I used to be a Republican until Donald Trump hijacked the party. I can give you my opinion as to what is happening in America but I'll give a little background first.

When the Don ran in 2015, I was working with a guy that said he was going to vote for him. I was shocked! This was a conservative guy with common sense. I asked him why he was going to vote for him and his answer was 'he's going to shake up Washington.' Then I mentioned all the things he said and his reply was 'Nah, he doesn't really mean that. What he actually means is...' And every single time I asked someone about what Trump said, the answer kept being 'He doesn't mean that. What he really means is....' They put their thoughts into what they thought he was going to do even though I kept screaming that he is going to do what he says he is going to do.

When Trump was President, all I heard was 'I wish he'd get off Twitter and stop talking.'

During his 1st administration, he had some 'grown ups' that kept him from doing what he really wanted to do. Don't get me wrong, he was doing some evil things that the Republican party knew about and was 'ok with.' For instance, the Republican party always respected the veterans. Donald cares nothing about veterans and so the party lurched that way.

Covid came. Trump tried to kill the entire world and so he lost to Biden.

Biden was ok but that debate was a killer. It was devastating. The Dems through out Harris for President and I thought she actually had a chance.

But she had three major things going against her. 1) she was female. 2) she was black. 3) Americans are stupid. (I say that as an American loving born and bred on the farm patriot. We simply do not think anymore.)

So, Trump ran. I thought he'd lose. But when I asked my friends why they were voting for him, they always said one thing: I had more money in my pocket when Trump was President.

And I thought about that and it was 100% true. Americans were rolling in money when Trump was President. But not because of him. Actually it was in spite of him.

Americans only remember the 'good' part of Covid. In America, student loans were paused, evictions were stopped, unemployment was to the point that you made more money not working than you made working because of the extra government subsidies, companies didn't have to worry about payroll because of the PPP (Payroll Protection Plan), and everyone was getting stimulated from the government stimulus checks. So we were getting all this money...and we had no way to spend it. Couldn't go out to eat. Couldn't go to the movies. Couldn't go on vacation. The money just piled up.

And that is what too many Americans remember about the first Trump administration.

Now, Trump is doing exactly what he always said he was going to do. He's been screaming tariffs since the mid-80s. Voters that actually paid attention to him knew it was going to happen. My opinion is that many people voted for him not realizing they were voting 100% against their own interests. Trump doesn't care about anyone except those who bend the knee to him.

So, what do his MAGA loving voters think now? They're a bit confused. Turns out tariffs really are just a tax on the American people. (who knew??) And maybe getting rid of the educational system isn't the best idea. Unfortunately, things are happening that will affect them but they don't know it yet. Why? Because his MAGA peeps are all about FoxNews. And FoxNews only tells them the good things. Even when they were talking about tariffs on cars, my friend was trying to convince me that car prices were going to go down!!! it was the craziest conversation ever. But that's exactly what he was told on FoxNews and Trump has convinced all his voters that any other new source is fake news. (Dictator 101 - control the message)

And one more thing about Americans that the world probably already knows. When we go places, we expect everyone to speak 'American' and do what we think they should do. Why? Because Americans only know America. I've traveled through Europe and was amazed at how much other people in other countries know about America. We know NOTHING of history. Hitler was bad. That we know. What Hitler did to gain power (which is similar to what Trump is doing) we're clueless about. We are 'told' that Russia is bad. Trump is now saying 'Russia isn't that bad.' Americans don't know about the Soviet Union and Stalin and the history of totalitarian countries. I mean, we 'know' but we choose to think 'that would never happen to us. We're America!'

Even the Democrats - the opposition party - is clueless. Their belief is to wait until Trump does something and then run to that place screaming 'look at what he did!' We need real opposition! (Not violence. I don't believe in violence) But we need the students at the universities like Poland in the late 30s. We need the Dems to 'infiltrate' the Republican party so that they will know what is going to happen before they find out about it on CNN (Cable News Network). We need them to work with the Republicans that don't believe in Trump. There has to be a ton of Claus von Stauffenberg's in the Republican party. And, more importantly, the Democrats need to be in Germany and Hungary asking them how to stop Trump. Trump isn't new. It is impossible to believe that Germany can't look back in their history and say 'this is what you need to do NOW!'

So, that's a lot and probably went waaaay off the original topic.

But America, shockingly, has not gone as low as we are going to go. Trump has said publicly that he would consider a 3rd term. Some Republicans, the party of law and order, don't have a problem with that. Republicans in Congress want to pass a law to remove judges they don't like. The groundwork is already being laid...

Which is why I'm in Canada now. To support your businesses and get away from the crazies for a few minutes.

Shit licker redneck belief: Trump is only deporting the bad guys to keep us safe! Why should I care?
Actuality: Trump starts with the 'bad guys' to make Americans used to people being deported. Then he, as he has fucking already said, deports 'bad Americans.' And as you said @dirtydaveiii, bad guys are anyone that speaks negative against Trump.

As an American, I am as shocked as the rest of the non-American world!

Thanks for that post.
I haven't heard the argument that people felt richer under trump because of covid money, makes a lot of sense.

The first lesson from Germany should be from 'first they came for'.

I actually posted that on FaceBook trying to remind people that this is not new. Didn't even get a thumbs up! Most of my friends on Facebook are bible beating Republicans who shouted 'Lock Her Up' over Hilary's email server but can't seem to get that same energy with Trump's team posting on Signal.

The hypocrisy in the Republican party is mind-numbing!!! And, once again, I say that as a former card carrying member of the party.

Too say Trump tried to kill the world during COVID is just plain wrong...He championed operation warp speed as he saw it was his path to getting re-elected. When the first vaccines came out about a month after the election Trump tried to insinuate that it was purposely done to sabotage his chances.

As for Kamala not getting elected because she was a black woman...If Joe Biden did the right thing and stepped aside after his term. Then they held a proper selection process and let's say than ran Michelle Obama...Do you think they lose? I'm betting not.

You can't champion Operation Warp Speed and then push vaccine hesitancy. I 100% believe that if Trump had been more knowledgeable about what was going on and pushed for Americans to get vaccinated, we would have had fewer deaths. I say that because I know people that did not get the vaccine because they believed Trump did not want them to get it. When the vaccine first came out, I drove my family nearly 100 miles to Trump territory because they had tons of dosages available!

And I think Trump is very shrewd. But I don't think he was shrewd enough to believe Operation Warp Speed was his 'path to getting re-elected.' I listened to all the debates - and the pre-debates and most of his 'rallies' - and I don't remember Covid being brought up too often other to say it was a 'Chinese virus.'

I can't argue an 'if' but I can say that Michelle Obama running is/was a wet dream. She has said over and over and over and over again that she would not run. And I'm not sure she would have beat Trump. In America, we have millions of people who hate Obamacare but love the Affordable Care Act. That's the world I live in. (And since this is a Canadian board, Obamacare is the Affordable Care Act). So, she would have have regained the black vote but I'm not sure she would have won. America is still a lot more backwards than we care to admit.

However, I will concede that if the Democrats had a proper selection process things 'might' have been different. Didn't love/hate Biden but he did say he was a 'transition' president. If he had in 2023 said 'ok, let's pick the next President from the Democratic party. I'm stepping down' things might have been different. But the goal of every first term president is to be a second term president.

And once he did step down, I think the Harris pick was genius! Even though she was the VP, she was still 'new' to most of America. There was not a lot of time for opposition research. There was not enough time for her to flub a line or say something too stupid. She got an immediate bump. I thought that would be enough to push her over the line. But it wasn't....

The vaccine was first developed successfully out of warp speed by a team in Germany (led by a girl from Israel and Turkish scientist). Trump used warp speed to sign an executive order to make it mandatory for pharma to sell 300 million doses to the US first, bypassing other countries.

And warp speed left the impression to stupid Americans that the vaccine was developed on the fly and was not safe at all.

Right now, the US medical associations are in panic mode as they will lose 20 to 40% of participants coming out of the US. And international associations are doing everything they can to move their meeting out of the US and are planning future meetings out of the US.

It is now safer to hold an international meeting in Istanbul than in the US!

This is a hundred billion dollar market...

When your scientists are being told to buy burner phones for when they attend international meetings because phones are being analyzed when you return to your country, you know there is a problem...

Am so happy you said that. Spot on.
I keep calling Trump and co Nazi, and we have many wannabe MAGA quislings here, who keep telling me he is not because he is not doing what they did during WW2.
WW2 came later.
I keep telling them to focus on what the Nazis did in the 20s and early 30s, their rhetoric and how they gained support to see the parallels.

Previous administrations should have thought about this before allowing tens of millions of illegals to take up residence in the USA.

Their shortsightedness and lack of a spine has made this a very difficult situation.

It takes a real leader to get it done, regardless.
Trump is no leader at all. He is a dictator.
