We can actually see what will happen if we look south. Speed limits on US highways have been increasing over the last 10 years and this is accompanied by increased motor vehicle fatalities.

per IIHS:
Raising speed limits leads to more deaths.”

.

British Columbia reduced some speed limits in 2018 -

401 from London to Windsor should be no speed limit like the autobahn.

McLaren 720S on the AUTOBAHN!

This is worrisome for me as well...A certain percentage of drivers will push the limits.

Personally I used to drive like a bat out of hell when I was younger but now just the opposite.

I'm quite content to take a little extra time to get where I'm going and arrive safer.

Black ice and snow squalls on the 401 are something to take seriously. Reaction times will be greatly reduced
I like the increase in the speed limit

As long as people drive in their own limits with the flow of traffic
People need to be more European and stay out of the left lane, allowing faster people to go fast
I also wished people merged and change lanes properly. That's where most of the accidents happen in my experience - speed doesn't usually kill. Changing direction or suddenly having to slow down does. Don't tailgate and touch your brake pedal every other second and make a chain reaction behind you
Use your accelerator to get on freeways at speed - don't enter my right lane at 60 kph and make the rest of the 401 brake b/c of you entering
Same with exiting - get in the exit lane and then hit your brakes afterwards - don't slow down in the right lane and slow up the flow of traffic behind you

Some one should make a thread of driving pet peeves :)

I was thinking more along the lines of a special license (course and driver testing every two years) and insurance to drive 130 to 150km without penalty, although anything over 150 would still be license suspension and automatic 1000.00 fine for first offence. Also increased fines and suspensions for left lane hogs.

The speed limit on the 404 from Aurora to the northern end has already been changed to 110 for 2 years with no significant change to deaths or accidents, Real average speed is 130. I think it been okay.

They could do a test run on this. 120 speed limit outside GTA...it will work wonders....but the stretch of Courtice all the way to Halton Hills will still be congested and increase speed limit will not fix it...the problem with the congestion is a driver skill problem...not speed limit.

Was up 69 highway south of Sudbury a little while ago and the speed limit there was 110 KPH, not sure how long it has been that way.

Excellent points.

Driver education in Ontario gets a failing grade in my opinion. You don't have to take driving lessons and most of companies providing instruction teach you how to pass the test, not actually how to drive.

Some of the worst offenders are drivers who refuse to move to the right to let others pass on highways. It messes up the flow of traffic, causes traffic to stack up, forces drivers to slow down to change lanes which causes traffic to back up behind them and causes (the most dangerous situation), drivers passing on the right.

I'm sure there's many driving pet peeves threads. ;)
