There are many talented and experienced professional negotiators here in Canada. It's obvious that NONE OF THEM have the ear of the Trudeau government. Sheer incompetence. Trump's ultimatum is an OPPORTUNITY, not an existential threat. It was NEVER difficult to see what Trump really wants out of these talks, and who he really wants it from. This is an opportunity to steer the free trade agreement in Canada's favor, not over the US, but over Mexico (and possibly China as well). Trump couldn't be signalling this any harder if he held up a sign!

Well, he has said that he wants to annex Canada. Then reverse the balance of trade. Then stop that 40 or so lbs of fentanyl coming from Canada to the USA.

It really is pretty confusing. He's like the dude who's all dressed up to go out to dinner and can't decide if he wants to wear the red sneakers or the green flip flops with his suit and tie.

You got to explain this one.

You're in a totally different universe than everyone else here on what you just wrote!

It was an opportunity to call trumps bluff and it happened beautifully.
All Trump and his dumbass supporters want is a show where Trump is a prima ballerina and everyone else dances around him

Oh please. What he's actually said is he thinks it would be in our mutual economic interest to join the US. Leaving aside the strength of that opinion, this is just standard bargaining tactics - making it seem that you think you're set on claiming the world, when you'd really settle for pennies on the dollar, because that would be a win.

Our federal government is famously intransigent. They actually need a fire lit under them to get them to do anything, even things in their mutual interest.

Not to derail your main point, but the relative amount of fentanyl coming across the Canadian border into the US, and how much has ever been seized, isn't really the point. If the US succeeds in tightening up the Mexican border, you can reasonably expect traffickers to shift more product to the Canadian border. You can't just fence off 3 sides of a cattle pen and expect wolves won't try to get into the open side.

It really is pretty confusing. He's like the dude who's all dressed up to go out to dinner and can't decide if he wants to wear the red sneakers or the green flip flops with his suit and tie.

I only see the situation for what it is. It's a mystery to me why everyone can't see it. We are part of a tri-lateral trade agreement. There are only one set of core provisions for everyone in the deal, but these terms don't operate to advantage of everyone equally. Mexico clearly gets the greatest benefit from the deal as it stands. But Trump can't come out and say that without blowing the whole thing up, so he has to speak to Canada and Mexico at the same time, and that's what he's doing. But make no mistake, he's looking for an ally to make things tougher for Mexico. That's where American (and some Canadian) manufacturing jobs went (as well as to China and India), not to Canada. If Canada was smart, we would seize the opportunity to get on board with the US to "retune" the agreement to create a competitive advantage for Canada. The simple arguments are: a) Canada's workforce has not absorbed American manufacturing jobs, b) a significant portion of Canadian profits are captured by US ownership, so there isn't as much wealth leaking from the US to Canada as the balance of trade would suggest, and c) US interests would be undermined, and US energy security would be threatened, by forcing Canada into more substantial trading arrangements with other countries. Mexico's counters on these issues are weak by comparison. Lastly, Trump needs to be reminded that he is a President who favors smaller government. Collecting substantial tariffs enlarges governments and increases the opportunity for left leaning governments to do more wealth redistribution.

Tie free trade to free opportunity for foreign investment and ownership, and you have a win-win solution.

Meanwhile, Canada should improve its border security simply because that's the right thing to do for its citizens. Our government shouldn't have to be threatened into protecting its citizens.

Last, and best of all, creating this specific conceptual link REALLY hurts the Chinese, who have imported more North American manufacturing jobs than any nation on earth.

Not one of the Liberal leadership can play this hand of cards correctly. They need to reach out to PROFESSIONAL negotiators for help. The question is - will they?

Yeah the left is repulsed by the former leader of a nation falsifying business records and committing a felony in the process.
That is less serious than a mere 2lbs of Fentanyl slipping through the cracks.
Not sure why you are bringing up Clinton. He got impeached.

Such small numbers are acceptable and need no further action.
There is always going to be fentanyl, drugs, crime and illegal immigrants who somehow make it across the border despite our best efforts.
The left is practical enough to not worry about inconsequential things and waste tax payer money for a payoff that isn't worth the cost.
MAGAts on the other hand are advocating for spending taxpayer money irresponsibly on trivial things such as 2lbs of Fentanyl.
This is because their motivations are based on hatred of people groups based on race, gender and sexual orientation.
Dumb lunatics and nazis led by an incontinent con man and an autistic nazi lmfao.
I've come to the conclusion that you actually enjoy looking foolish...or your mouth works way faster than your brain...or both.

One kilogram of fentanyl has the potential to kill 500,000 people

...and calling 80 million Americans Nazi's only proves who the real lunatic is.

I will take the word of the court who tried him and convicted him on 34 counts over your mental gymnastics.
Yes and a mere 0.2% of all fent seizures in the US.
Its negligible enough to not warrant a trade war.
But of course to MAGA cult members, who never heard of fentanyl before 6 months, this is a big deal because the tangerine tyrant said so. lol.

ahahaha 😄 😄 😄 😄 yeah like trump gives a fuck about those people 😄 😄 😄

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump announced Tuesday Jan 21, 2025 that he had pardoned Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, an underground website for selling drugs.
Ulbricht had been sentenced to life in prison in 2015 after a high-profile prosecution that highlighted the role of the internet in illegal markets.
Trump posted on Truth Social, his social media website, that he had spoken to Ulbricht’s mother on his first full day in office.
“It was my pleasure to have just signed a full and unconditional pardon of her son, Ross,” he wrote. “The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponization of government against me.”

Ulbricht was found guilty of charges including conspiracy to commit drug trafficking, money laundering and computer hacking. During his trial, prosecutors said Ulbricht's website, hosted on the hidden "dark web", sold more than $200m (£131m) worth of drugs anonymously.
Silk Road was once the largest “dark web” marketplace for illegal drugs and other services. In March 2013 the secret site listed 10,000 items for sale, 7,000 of which were drugs including cannabis, MDMA and heroin. Prosecutors said Silk Road had generated nearly $213.9m (£140m) in sales and $13.2m in commissions before police shut it down.

Regardless of the toxicity of fentanyl, and there are more toxic materials that are available in much larger quantities in the US, on the Canadian side it amounts to a mere 0.2% of seizures.
Negligible and not worth a trade war.
And people who do Nazi salutes and support Nazi policies are rightfully called Nazis if they weren't resorting to mental gymnastics.

You conveniently left out the part about the FBI agents who were working the case against him pleading guilty to stealing thousands of dollars from the website.
Total sham investigation like many others.

(I'll let the misguided comment about nazis slide because it's the usual leftist distraction tactic that has never worked and will never work and only comes across as desperate.)

The .2% figure is from an article below... you conveniently decided to ignore more info within:

Canada's financial intelligence agency reported that organised criminal groups in Canada are increasingly involved in the production of fentanyl by importing chemicals used to make it and lab equipment from China.
The trade in fentanyl takes place in both directions. In the first 10 months of 2024, the Canadian border service reported seizing 10.8lb (4.9kg) of fentanyl entering from the US, while US Border Patrol intercepted 32.1lb (14.6kg) of fentanyl coming from Canada.
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg93nn1e6go

14Kg of Fentanyl has the potential to kill millions of people.

If you are too ignorant to think that strengthening the border will also stop other dangerous drugs then you are beyond help.

I find it fascinating how you will trivialize a dangerous drug but then lose your mind about bookkeeping errors.

But I do enjoy watching you look foolish & desperate...very entertaining indeed!
