however policy direction is far more important than liking / not liking a personality and the democrats were heading down loonie left laneway on policy

Why not?

People that have this much of a problem with opposing political views have something missing in their lives and really need professional help.
Trump fans having a huge problem with opposing political views is a huge part of their identity.
Being fragile china dolls about it being applied to them seems like an admission of a huge character defect.
