Canada Post has been losing about $1 billion per year, yet doesn't modernize or trim its workforce accordingly like any other private business would need to do to remain competitive.

So now, like every other public sector union, the public is held hostage and not getting services we have already paid for via our taxes just so people can make more money and feel entitled to a job.

These days there are plenty of alternatives and it's time to take Canada Post & it's union behind the barn and put it out of its misery.

According to the union, its list of demands includes wage increases aligned with inflation, enhancements to group benefits — such as coverage for fertility treatments and gender-affirming care — improved protections against technological changes, more paid medical leave, paid meal and rest periods and higher short-term disability payments.

All of the sectors you mentioned are not government. If a company can't be competitive it shuts down and loses business to other private businesses, and people lose their jobs.

Government? Not so much. They just milk the public for more money through taxes.

I doubt anyone other than Canada Post has the coverage to deliver mail to remote areas of Canada.
Then scale Canada Post down for that coverage only. Not keep losing $millions+ every year. That makes no sense and no business would survive that way.

Then that would be a loss making entity.
I do agree however that something is wrong in the way they are operating.

I just realized, my favorite adult magazine The Economist will be running even later than usual. Normally they show up pretty late as it is. I guess I will have to wait longer to see the fallout of what happens after that Austrian Archduke got killed. I am sure the Austro-Hungrarians will make some reasonable demands on the Serbs and all will be fine.

Hot investment tip: Theranos. They make a compact blood analyzer that tests for many indicators from a small drop of blood. Get in on the ground floor, now.

There is a ton of waste at CP that could be easily be fixed.

Stop door to door delivery, one of the first things Trudeau did while in office was stop the installation of the superboxes in older neighbourhoods. Move everything to these and you need a lot less manpower.

We don’t need daily delivery, go to a 3 day rotation, you’ll need 1/3 the mail carriers and 1/3 the vehicles and fuel. I rarely get mail at home or my office more than twice a week as it is.

I know the union will fight both of those but it’s time govt found the spine to do what needs to be done.

something wrong with the way they are operating ?

Yes there is , its called partnering with an union which promotes entitlement, abuse of the tax payer and assumes zero financial risk

wage increases aligned with inflation, enhancements to group benefits — such as coverage for fertility treatments and gender-affirming care — improved protections against technological changes, more paid medical leave, paid meal and rest periods and higher short-term disability payments.

offer the fulfillment of mail delivery across the entire country to the private sector, and have a regulator set rate increases similar to how utilities are regulator

you believe Canada Post needs to be aligned with every other sector except for .............the need to be competitive and profitable
how convenient for you to ignore the reality that every other sector faces.

"every joe blow out there" knows if his company does not control costs and make a profit, then he is out of a job

how in world are you able to ignore Billion $ losses and still think you have a valid comparison ?

few years from now, when minium wage reaces $19-$20 an hour, it will not look so bad
it certainly will look bad to all the entitled workers who get laid off because of irresponsible wage demands

I suspect the reason your dad was pissed is because he knew he would need to pay for the irresponsible wage increases via inflation and this case via his taxes.
Parents often spare their kids the unpleasant details of reality and hope their offspring will eventually gain wisdom with maturity.

that was the nicest, least insulting way to explain this to you

That will be a fucking disaster.
They wont provide services to rural and remote communities.
we have a fucking disaster now

include massive punitive penalties for dropping services to rural and remote communities in the contract
let the private sector assume the financial risks in exchange for the opportunity to reap the reward of profit.

rural and remote consumers often pay more for food, furniture, cars trucks etc. because of the higher cost of delivery
it should not be any different for the delivery of a letter / package.

your argument had some validity prior to the evolution of electronic communication,..... not now

Tell us how a business would handle that if you believe there is something wrong in the way they are operating?
