I would assume they are talking about a chamber pot. This would date back to before indoor toilets.


Answer : In ancient times poor people would sell their piss to tanners to process animal hides into leather. An insult at the time was to say a person was so poor that they did not even have a pot to piss in so that he could sell his piss to the tanner.
