They want words like "she", "American", and "addicted" to be banned.

Even the far left (TYT) are disgusted and outraged.

Stanford University has published a list of 'harmful language' that it wants to eliminate because the terms are ' racist, violent and biased ' - including American - as it calls for US citizen to be used.

In the past, many words have been phased out that were offensive or sexist. They made sense:

sex:

fireman, policeman, cameraman -> firefighter, police officer, camera operator. Eliminating the word "man" removes the bias that these occupations are for men only. Young girls, especially, if they grow up hearing about "policemen" may be conditioned subconsciously to think that these jobs are for mainly for men.

You throw "like a girl". "like a girl" was commonly used in the past. It's demeaning, implying that girls are weak and inferior.

race:

Oriental -> asian. As an Asian, I hated being called Oriental. Everyone knows that it referred to people who looked Chinese (so if you were Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, etc.). I always felt that the word was antiquated and pejorative.

Several mascot names were really offensive: "Redskins" for example

Disabilities:

retarded -> mentallly handicapped.


Homsexual:

Fag/faggot

This "f word" was extremely common when I was growing up, and people used it all the time.

It is a word that should unify but sadly the cultural and political conversation/divide in the US is such that anyone referring to themselves as "American" on the regular, tends to use it in a display of overt nationalism. They also tend to be right wing trumptards these days.

This doesn't apply to Canada though. We may have some right wing nuts, but usually their rhetoric is far more toned down than south of the border.

So in all the information in this thread...what really clicked for you is that "american" is offensive because you associate it with Trump and his followers? It never appalled you that "she" and a few words shouldn't be used....Trump is done and probably won't even win local elections but he really did a number on you...

I dont associate any word with anything nor do I care about Trump (It is not my country). I am just trying to speculate on their rationale for the banning the word American.

It's an old argument about using "American" to only mean "Citizen of the United States of America" when there are two continents called America and you can make the argument that anyone from anywhere on the continent is an "American".
