I think the fact that she's famous and it was a news story pushed the admin to deal with Putin on this. I think the fact that she was egregiously excessively punished was also a factor. If the Russians gave her 4 months in the Moscow Jail, people would be less concerned. But 9 years in the Gulag is likely a death sentence, especially for a Black woman and especially for an American. People get murdered or deliberately starved to death in those places. If I'm Biden, I probably don't want that death on my conscience.

Wasn't it Trudeau who said "A Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian"? He even applied this to someone born in Canada but grew up in a foreign country and took up arms with the Taliban and then paid him $10mm. (Paul Whelan was born in Canada, did not take up arms with the Taliban, so does that mean he doesn't get the $10mm?)
