We also lost NORTEL. We don't seem to have any global technology companies. The demise of RIM was a national disgrace like the AVRO arrow collapse .
I wonder if it would have made a difference if they were able to partner or joint venture with a larger global company? I owned some RIM shares (cost $3), finally sold them in March 2020 when the share price ran up into the $20's.They were great inventors and owe their past success at being the first to introduce ground breaking technolgies on a large scale, especially for business purposes. They were less sucesssful at evolving and upgrading the technologies that they initially brought to the market, and they underestimated the demand of cell phones for personal use. Maintaining market share and ongoing innovation requires a different skill set than those that made them big. Might be a different story today had they supplemented their leadership team with people with these attributes.
Good investing on your part. Kudos! Partnering could have helped as well. Partnering is another way to bring different skill sets to the table. Companies require different types of leadership at different stages of their life cycle. The RIM/bb leadership group was great at launching new products and technologies but they needed help for subsequent business cycle phases.I wonder if it would have made a difference if they were able to partner or joint venture with a larger global company? If I was a better investor, I could have cashed out at much higher prices. LOL!

It's tough for a RIM to compete against an Apple, Samsung, Huawei, LG, etc. I think Samsung is backed by the Korean government. (Lord forbid the Canadian government support a Canadian technology company. Instead, they are trying to destroy Bell and Rogers.)
I’ll try to find the article, but I remember the theory as to Nortel’s demise was combination of Chinese espionage and lack of political will…. Nortel was gutted and Canada allowed the fire sale as the technology was already stolen. Maybe Huawei is really Nortel? We also lost NORTEL. We don't seem to have any global technology companies.
They were popular before smartphones really kicked in after 2010-2012Its so weird ... back around 2009 these guys were the kingpins.
