Orson Wells was the in big demand from the late 1930s into the mid 1950s, he commanded big money for his voice overs and narration. William Conrad started to do his style starting in the mid 1950s. This caused Orson Wells to lose jobs to Conrad because Conrad would do the jobs for about 1/10th the price. Wells also thought that Conrad was cheapening his brand by doing commercials and narration for cartoons like The Rocky & Bullwinkle show and The Dudley Do-Right Show. One day as Wells was going to an audition for a narration part, Conrad was leaving the office. Wells beat the crap out of Conrad.
BTW - Conrad is a no talent ham actor, without the help of a director to tell him how to deliver a line he would sound like an amateur actor in a high school skit. After his TV show Cannon wrapped up TV in 1976 he came to Canada to do a pilot with the possibility of doing a series. In the pilot Shock Trauma, he played a surgeon in a hospital. His acting was so bad that the pilot never progressed into a series.
