I don't know how much it played into her early demise, Christine Blatchford was a functioning alcoholic for most of her career.

A unique voice is lost, sad.

Yes knew she was battling cancer since last year. She called them like she saw them. Journalism has lost an outspoken commentator.

She was a great journalist.

I had no idea she was ill. She didn't announce it in any way. She loved and was a huge supporter of the Canadian military and of animals, dogs in particular. She was part of the last generation of real journalists, not like today's batch of essentially clowns and entertainment writers.

I will miss reading her columns.

68 is way too young.

Always enjoyed her comments on 1010.
She had a refreshingly honest approach to everything.

We lost one of the best today.

RIP

I`ve recently read two of her books, Fifteen Days...her account of Canadian Army troops in Afghanistan, just tremendous. The other is Helpless, the story of the Native occupation of Caledonia, in her words.." Caledonia`s nightmare of fear and anarchy, and how the law failed all of us". If the current Native rail disruptions get you irked this book will make your head explode..unfuckingbelievable.

She died of lung cancer which was only diagnosed last fall. I can remember a few of her stories that reduced me to tears. She had a knack in telling the story. RIP

Christine Blatchford was a brilliant writer, most brilliant writers wrestle with demons. They don't become great writers by being happy and gay, she drank like a fish and smoked lie a chimney.

I'm not being disrespectful, it's the truth.

On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Greece
She always went to the hard places and tackled the stories that others would shy away from.

Journalism is poorer today. Much respect for a life that had meaning. She had an impact.

Her coverage during Ghoemeshi was outstanding.
You are so right I had totally forgotten this part of her history. As usual she did some great work there, thanks for the reminder

I thought first about court/crime reporting and about following the troops into war zones

I hate cancer...yet it still boggles my mind how in our day and age we still have late discovery "late stage cancer". Was it because of a fast progressing cancer or she just doesn't get herself checked regularly? I mean lung cancer there should be early indication like shortness of breath n stuff no?

She didn't have any of that. Actually she just came back from vacation that included hiking and some steep inclines. She had back pain and two months later she was dead.

I heard she had what felt like a bad chest cold that wouldn't go away and complained about pain in her leg. She went to the doctor, he told her it could be a hamstring issue and to take a break from running. She then lost her appetite and a desire to drink coffee. She went back to the doctor and they found a growth on her back. Her lung cancer had spread. A couple months later she was dead.

Wow that shit is crazy. I mean every time I go to the doctor for physical they check breathing, vitals etc...by then doctors can also ask further testings if they detect abnormalities. There is good chance of surviving early stages but late stage that's not a good look.

Sad to hear the news of her passing. Brash and brilliant she was. Famous story of her in the 90's speaking too close to an open microphone
at a head table.... She was having dinner at the head table of a corporate event and said "I want to suck your cock" to the man dining beside her.
The Audio Visual technician left the mic up during dinner and the comment was heard by a few out at the tables in the room.

She was a disgusting person.

"In an article in the National Post online on August 22, 2011, she criticized the outpouring of support resulting from the death of federal NDP Leader and the Parliament of Canada's Leader of the Opposition Jack Layton, calling it "a public spectacle", and referring to Layton's "canonization". This caused an outcry toward Blatchford herself. Blatchford's commentary on the 2013 suicide of Rehtaeh Parsons also led to Parsons' father accusing Blatchford of victim blaming."

She had no class in the event of the deaths of more productive people in society. Therefore I feel she got some karma, I hope she suffered. Her type are the last of a dying breed, the right wingers on this site will be mourning Rush soon enough as well.
