Or, again, mute your damn phone at night. I got the alert last night, I didn’t hear it because my phone was on silent. Didn’t see the alert message until this morning. You don’t want your phone bothering you when you’re trying to sleep? Put it on silent. Not that hard.

I'm supportive of Amber Alerts but this instance seems to be an abuse of the system.I actually got 3 alerts the last one around 6am. Wasn't pleased.

In a place far, far away
There is this little button on the phone. Press it and viola no wake up call.

Please send $10 to me if you do this.

It’s actually even easier than remembering to turn it on silent each night.

Schedule Do Not Disturb mode each night.

My question is :

Reported at 1:30 in the afternoon

The police response is " at 3 am we ran out of investigative leads?"

Are you fucking kidding?????

They have been responsible of 3 of 4 last amber alerts all at 2 to 5 am in the morning... is that the only time their "detectives" work?

just asking

Well, the problem is if there’s an opt-out, then the system may as well not exist at all. The whole point is to get as many people as possible in the area keeping an eye out for these kids. If everyone opts out (and lets be honest, a huge number of people will), then it’s pointless. I get that it’s intrusive, but come on guys, it’s missing kids. If the system saves lives, we can deal with it. Like I said, just put your phone on silent at night and it won’t bother you.

I don’t even understand why this is an issue. I thought everyone put their phone on silent to sleep anyway. Do you guys not have those dickhead friends who don’t understand that calling/texting/messaging you at like 3:00 isn’t cool? Everyone has at least one of those, right? And what about those autodialler scam calls? Why would you possibly not mute your phone at night?

This issue is that 4 of the 5 most recent alerts have ALL been abuses (and quite honestly the 1 that was legit sounded non legit at the time; then dad went and killed kids and shot himself. But even in that scenario, we have police patting themselves on backs for "good job" despite fact alert issued 10 hours after dissapearance and because so late at night everyone was dead afterwards so noone arrested and wife is basically life over so screw up imo anyways)

There should be an option to opt out of the amber alert through your provider.
There is
The government INSISTED that cell providers disable this option for us though

If you are using a non-Canadian cell phone you CAN opt out

Because you may have an elderly parent or a child at college who may have an emergency (including emotional emergency) and whose call you do not want to miss. I do not care about Amber alerts not inside the house, not outside, and I will not look for a missing child or a car description. Why people who care must insist that people who do not care and will not help anyway got inconvenienced? What about people who need to take an important test in the morning that is offered only once a year and its results greatly affect their future? If there are many people who care, let the once who do not to opt out - there still will be a lot of "care" people to help. People who will opt out do not support the Amber alert system and will not listen for it anyway, so, everybody will be better off (and less 911 phone calls to complaint)

If I was driving and the alarm went off, can I legally look at my phone and read the message while driving?

A couple of months ago there was a similar alert but during the day. I was inside a store at the time when peoples phones started to sound the alarm one by one. It was a very weird situation. Many people didn't realize right away what was happening and were quite frazzled. I know that its a small price to pay for what can be a life saving situation but really what is it that we are suppose to do? Most people turned their phones off and kept shopping.

I wonder why some get it and some don't
Geographic assignment - basically a 'region' of towers is selected and the alert is sent.

My phone and home address is far outside the GTA (few hours away) but since I was in Mississauga this week I got the alert. I suspect members on here who are far enough outside the selected area/towers are those who did not get the alert.

Just for laughs

When I called in today I asked them how much was the reward money
They said no reward
I asked them to confirm its not like the 222 TIPS line in Toronto
I was told its important since its an Amber Alert
So I told them not interested and hung up and they called back lol

Funny so at least they wasted their own time this time

Is there a way to purchase a foreign phone to avoid the amber alerts? I find it rather annoying and having an option to opt out would be nice.
I'm not sure how exactly how I opted out of it. However I never receive it anymore.

I purchased an unlocked phone off of amazon and replaced the stock rom with lineage os.
