When nothing changed after Sandy Hook in 2012 when 25 kids, 5 and 6 year olds were massacred, I knew right then, America was not salvageable. politicians could not find the courage to change the gun laws because they were afraid of losing votes to the gun lobby. If they could not find anything in their hearts or minds to honour the murdered children and their broken families, then nothing will change.
America reaps the seeds they sow.
The American mentality is fucked up when to comes to guns. People, politicians, gun makers etc...

Now I can understand gun makers. It's all about sales. But people and politicians should know better.

Just to show how dumb it is, whenever a big killing happens people go running out to buy guns and gun stocks go up. Nothing makes gun makers happier than an incident like this because they know people will be lining up to buy guns, rifles and shotguns the next day.

People think buying hoards of guns will protect them.

How is buying a gun or two going to stop a crazed guy ambushing you a block away, 30 floors high and with enough ammo and ranged weapons to last hours? it won't.

It's not like we're saying ban six shooters and rifles. Those can be legitimately for hunting or protection. We are talking about semiautomatic and assault rapid fire machine guns. Those are meant to kill people in combat. Lots of people. All the recent mass murders were done with semiautomatics.

But the NRA and right wing politicians cite their constitutional right to bear arms. Something that was written 250 years ago before machine guns were invented. Idiots.

This is a terrible terrible tragedy. And I can't believe so many people in the media are making politics of it. Hillary Clinton's comments were deplorable. And some VP broad at CBS had the gall to tweet she doesn't feel as bad knowing that most of those killed were probably Trump supporters. Then the never ending debate over gun control and how Sandy Hook didn't change anything did it blah blah blah. 59 innocent people were obliterated including 2 Canadians. Another 12 are in critical condition. Over 500 injured. This is a massacre. No time to be laying blame. Let's get the facts first before we decide.

I support the 2nd Amendment. The vast majority of gun owners are law abiding decent folks. Guns used in self defense have saved thousands of lives. But gun control needs to be discussed. Nobody needs to purchase 30+ guns for self defense or hunting. Background checks should be mandatory. Gun training should be mandatory. Semi automatic guns need to be registered (which I think most states do). Would that have stopped this maniac from inflicting as much damage as he did - I'm not sure. He illegally modified his guns to shoot automatically. He planned the attack over days, maybe weeks. He was wealthy, he was intelligent and seemingly was very motivated.

Good points.

I've seen these gun debates on various boards.

The pro-gun people will argue that the more powerful semi-auto military grade guns should be allowed. And it typically comes down to this:

1. Right to bear arms. More the better
2. Self defence vs. crooks. Need better gear because the crook will get blackmarket fancy gear, so I need fancy rifles too
3. Self defence against the US government. Because some reason there's a chance they think the government will oppress them by ordering the army, navy and air force to take over every city and kick them all out of their homes. So they need better weapons to fight against trained soldiers...... good luck with that

I support the 2nd Amendment.
Why?

People seem to think the 2nd amendment is sacrosanct for some odd reason

Only 14 (of the 50) states even were in existence at the time this amendment was created

Its not like they can not repeal/change amendments (eg 18th bans alcohol, or the Corwin amendment which is still pending regarding child labour laws)

Because people have the right to defend themselves and their property from harm.

Yes we know what the amendment is about, but WHY do they have that right?
We certainly do not have it in Canada and yet have not all been run off our property or had everything stolen and been killed

No machine gun was used in this mass shooting. The police have made that very clear. Semi autos are used in approximately half the mass shootings.

The Supreme Court in the U.S. has determined the second amendment is an individual, not a collective right that needs to bend to the will of the group, so it pretty much is sacrosanct according to the Courts.

It's the PEOPLE of America that are buying firearms, not the NRA or politicians. The fact there is over 100 million guns in the U.S. proves that. People want guns. Only a small, but vocal segment of the U.S. does not want them. This is reflected in their buying behaviour every time stricter laws are proposed. It's a big reason, if not THE biggest reason Clinton lost.

We have different histories. We are also 1/10 the size of the US and don't share a border with Mexico which is an extremely violent country. We also have the right to bear arms if we want to. With more restrictions of course.

Cultural differences. Finland, Sweden and Norway are packed with firearms. More than Canada, but they don't have the problems the U.S. has either.

The right choice is to do nothing. Every time there is talk of changing the gun laws to make them more restrictive, Americans send gun sales through the roof. Obama was the greatest gun salesman in the history of the United States. Under Trump, who is pro gun, firearms, ammunition and firearm accessory manufacturers experienced steep declines. Some have even closed shop. Historic companies like Remington are on the verge of bankruptcy. All the manufacturers are offering rebates. Guns became the cheapest they had ever been in the last 50 years. It's called the Trump Slump.

It may seem counter intuitive, but that's what works in America.
That's some weird sales logic, but yeah I remember reading about this too. Obama cracks down on guns and every gun lover and on-the-fencer lines up to buy them asap.

I didn't know gun makers struggled lately due to Trump.

You'd think a pro-gun mentality would lead to steady sales..... not rock bottom declines.

Switzerland used to have mandatory army issued firearms. I think men had to do mandatory army training for a few years and when they were done, every man (or maybe women too) gets a package containing two guns and boxes of bullets. A symbolic thing really, but it was meant for militia style defence.

I don't remember one news article saying an angry Swiss person mowed citizens with his army gear.

When you can check into a hotel in Vegas with 23 guns, some of them automatic, and 6,000 rounds of ammunition, .........
You realize that Vegas hosts SHOT Show, right? Checking into a hotel with a bunch of guns is literally an annual occurrence.

There are also people who think that putting someone's name into a database will somehow prevent them from committing crimes, or if they're refused a sale from a legitimate source, they some how won't turn to an illegal one.

It is bizarre, but then again, the people of USA insist on living and dying this way. It is their choice.

I have not read the thread or the debate this horrible shooting has caused here. I was just watching CNN with talks with a couple of the survivors and I am in tears. I can't even imagine talking points other then hurt, pain, and overwhelming sadness.

So while you all debate terror acts, gun laws and all the rest, my talking point is going to one thing and one thing...

Tell your loved ones that you love them. Hug them, hold them, do things with them. Find that old friend and rebook up, take that vacation you have been putting off with your family. Spend this coming thanksgiving with the ones who mean the most to you and be thankful for your life today. I know I am.

Much love TERB family. Much love to all of you. Even the ones who piss me off. This online community has been a home to me for years and all of you are apart of that for me so thank you.

Please have an amazing day today.

For those of you who think it's not guns that kill people, and it's people that kill people (like someone said pencils don't make spelling mistakes), I have just one question:

Places like the Japan that have some of the strictest gun laws in the world, why does this not happen there?
