Both the M*A*S*H theme and Star Trek theme had lyrics written for them quickly and without thought for the reason of capitalizing on rights to the theme. In the case of M*A*S*H the director of the original movie asked his teen aged son to write the theme and told him it the words did not have to relate to the movie. The director was paid $70,000 to direct the movie, by the time the TV series ended his son had made over $1 million on the them rights.
In the case of the Star Trek theme, Gene Roddenberry did not felt that he was not making enough out of the TV rights so he wrote the lyrics for the Star Trek theme music. Both the lyrics for the M*A*S*H and Star Trek themes were never intended to be used because they were so badly written but they may have eventually been used.
