I took it to mean a creature that is larger/more complex than a bacteria, i.e. part of the animal kingdom.
Just pointing out that my initial assumption was based on the descriptive "non bacteria". A bacterium in biological terms is neither plant nor animal. Ergo an organism more complex could be either animal or plant. But you and CC are correct that a tree does not really qualify as a creature.

If the owner had not paid up his fire fighters premiums, they would let the house burn. Then they would negotiate to buy the ruins and belongings after the fire.

In the mid 1800s the poll room was where bets were placed, it was also a place where people could also play billiards. Billiard tables became known as pool tables.

Up until about 10 years ago, there were few fast food restaurants in Scotland. If you orders pizza in a small restaurant or chip shop they would take out a frozen pizza and throw it into hot oil in a fryer.

I have seen this myself, where they would throw half a pizza into a fryer with oil that they have previously used to fry battered fish with, and then battered a Mars chocolate bar and fry that up in the same oil.
