You'd have to be a fucking moron NOT to use cruise on extended highway trips (but I'm sure you are such an amazing driver that you manage to keep a constant speed for hours on end). Of course there are guys who think they are Mario Andretti because they can drive at 120 kph.
A few years ago, I drove to New York. It took me about 9 hours. I don't know how I fucking did it without cruise control, because it's so fucking incredibly difficult to drive without cruise control. I must having have the abilities of a pilot to be able to drive long distances on highways at a constant speed without cruise control. I guess lesser mortals need cruise control.

Tapping the brake light on is a signal. I don't brake check people. But if you are doing nothing wrong you wouldn't have a problem with somebody who does.
I absolutely have problems with a guy who taps the breaks just because someone is behind him, especially if it's in the left lane of an open highway.

Cruise control is only good if the road ahead of you stays straight for a long time. Once you add curves and traffic, it's useless.

Traffic yes. Of course if people in traffic all had their cruise set at a reasonable speed, it would make things smoother for everyone. And off course if you looked back, I'm talking rural highways, not the 401 in rush hour. Curves on a highway, no problem. If you think about using cruise on some winding side road the yes, that would be an issue.

When I first moved here from out west I was shocked at how few people here signaled lane changes. But then I learned that it was because if you signal a lane change on a highway, the idiot in the next lane and behind you will come charging up to block you out.
That's so true. I'll still signal, but when I see him attempt to close the gap, I jam myself in there before he can. I don't care if he's pissed off at that point. I made my intentions clear, he decided to be an asshole. Still, that only works if you safely have enough time to get in front of him.

And you think you are entitled to tailgate?

Because let me tell you, on the scale of dumb ass things you can do, tailgating is a chart topper, while driving in the wrong lane is near the bottom.

If you aren't tailgating you won't see any tapping of brake lights, at least not from people like me.

I don't mean no traffic but the kind that causes you to brake or change a lane, etc.

I don't mean gentle curves but winding roads where you might have to slow down.

In ideal conditions, if you were driving to London or Montreal on the 401, many cars could use it without problems.

Modern cruise control systems maintain a constant distance between you and the vehicle in front and the most modern systems adjust your steering to keep you in your lane if you drift.

These are self driving car capabilities that are initially being introduced as safety systems to assist a driver but over time they will obviate the need for a driver. At least on well marked roads with clear lanes.

For now in the most advanced 2016 models you can turn on cruise control and let go of the wheel on a 400 type highway and the car (probably) won't crash, not even if you come across a traffic jam, not even if somebody cuts in front of you and brakes.

It is advisable to hold onto the wheel just in case, though. At least with the 2016 models. The system can't deal with things like hydroplaning, a tire blowout, or somebody actually hitting you on a no blind spot check lane change.

Number ONE

Trucks

I fucking hate trucks on the highway. Good way to get yourself killed real fast. They are usually not maintaned and the drivers are on dope. The vast majority of trucks are unsafe and should be pulled off the road. Wheels fly off every day, tires delaminate (because they are retreads) and fly off, stuff comes flying off, drivers fall asleep, they roll, they catch on fire.

Trucks are involved in 25 percent of all highway accidents and yet make up 4 percent of the number of vehicles on the road. In addition to that, 1 fully ladden truck does as much damage to the pavement as 10,000 car passes. And yet they pay nothing towards the real cost of highway construction.

Put it on trains.

Honestly, I totally disagree. I find that most truck drivers are very skilled and considerate on the road.

But...I hate dump trucks on 400 series highways. Thanks for all the paint chips assholes!

Another of my pet peeves: coaches in the left lane. Trucks aren't allowed, but apparently coaches are? They inevitably hold up traffic for long periods of time.

I recently read a newspaper article about what happens when a large pickup truck or SUV collides with a smaller vehicle. There more much more chance of the occupants of the smaller vehicle being injured or killed. A driver of a large SUV was asked for his opinion about this. He said he was concerned about the occupants of his own vehicle first. This explains a lot. There are people out there who don't care if they injure or kill someone else.

I have noticed there are drivers who don't care about their vehicles. They charge across a bumpy railway crossing and through rough construction sites without slowing down. They must have unlimited money to buy and repair vehicles.

PPL tap brakes because they think you're following too closely. It's a way to say "back the fuck off cuz if you run into me, it's your fault".
It's actually a technique taught in the canada safety council curriculum, motorcycle skills training courses

I've always thought that trains were a more efficient means of shipping long distances. Obviously there is a need for them but a truck driving cross-country seems wasteful to me.

You must be a truck driver.

There are excellent and conscientious truckers (they should be better than average commuters), but many are not, or their vehicles are not properly maintained.

I hate truckers who drive like they're in a sports car.

I'm not the biggest fan of trucks either. I see a lot of obviously tired driving going on. What really grinds my gears about them though is when trucks try to pass trucks and end up holding up a line of 30 cars in the passing lane because they want to pass but can't go fast enough to do it at a reasonable speed.

You can thank the government for that with their speed limiter law.
