Isn't it short for 'of the clock'?

Up until 1900, clocks and watches were very rare, so if you ask someone what time it was and they looked at a clock or watch they would say 1 O'clock. If they determined the time from a sundial or a stick in the ground they would say the time is 1 in the afternoon

I think it has to do with German soldiers in WWI trimming their long bushy staches so they could get a better fit for their gas masks.

The toothbrush mustache was around before WWI and Hitler, but it became popular during WWI because of the need to wear gas mask in the war.
Hitler did not make it popular, but he made it unpopular, the style faded after WWII because of its association with Hitler. Just as no one named their kid Adolf after the war
