In the 1930's Max Fleischer Popeye cartoons, why is there no synchronization between the dialogue and the cartoon characters' mouths?
The conventional method towards making cartoons is to record the vocal tracks first, then have the animators draw the cartoon characters' mouths to synchronize the pictures to the voices.
In the
Popeye cartoons, however, the animation was completed first, and the voice actors performed while watching the finished, (silent), cartoons. Most of the dialogue between
Popeye and
Bluto was improvised
ad libs.
