James Hunt
Correct!

Villeneuve made his Formula One debut at the 1977 British Grand Prix as the third McLaren entry, driving the 1976 chassis, teamed with Hunt and Jochen Maas. Despite the technical disadvantage, Villeneuve outqualified Maas. It was Maas' car that Villeneuve hit in his 1982 fatal accident.

Hunt had been impressed with Villeneuve after they had raced against each other in the Formula Atlantic Grand Prix of Trois Rivieres in 1976, when Villeneuve won against a field which included several F1 drivers. McLaren chose to not act on their option for Villeneuve, because he was considered likely to be 'expensive', (he had a reputation for damaging cars, beyond repair). They chose Patrick Tambay instead.

Ferrari signed Villeneuve for the last two races of 1977, as a third entry, but Niki Lauda, who had already won the Driver's Championship, quit the team, and Gilles was promoted to #2.

Seven drivers were leading the Formula One World Drivers' Championship at the end of the last Grand Prix they contested, (includes those who retired as series champion, but not active drivers). Who are they?
Alain Prost?, only one I can think of
Alain Prost retired from Formula One after winning the 1993 Drivers' Championship, so he is one of the seven.
