If you use Pacific Mall as your demographic benchmark, you'd have to assume that there are next to no white people, or black people, or brown people in the GTA, and 90% of the population stepped off a plane from China sometime in the last 15 years. And yet -- surprise surprise! -- the GTA is full of white people, black and brown people, and East Asians are less than a quarter of the population. Maybe Pacific Mall isn't representative of overall reality? Just a thought.

I'm aware that a numerical majority of Asian women in relationships are with Asian men, but to suggest that mixed couples are exceptionally rare is demonstrably false. Hell, I'm sitting here drinking a coffee outside St. Lawrence Market, enjoying the day, and in the time it took me to type this 3 mixed couples walked by.

Hey just a question for all you Asian guys in Toronto. Is it easier to get an Asian girl there? I live in Ottawa and am I having a bit of trouble finding an Asian gf since they are all going for white dudes. Just got back from the Taste of the Danforth. I spent over 4 hours there eating and observing. I didn't see a whole lot of white girls with Asian guys. Mostly white with white, and black with white. White girls like to hang out with Asian guys just as a friend mostly. If there is any constellation I saw an old Asian father sharing some Greek food with his white daughter.

Haha my mom's dead, and I'm 45, long past the age of trying to satisfy my Dad. However I must admit that when I was a teenager my parents would always say "marry a nice Chinese girl" and despite that, I wound up marrying a Filipino/Spanish woman. After divorcing in my late 20's, and then dating a Spanish girl that my parents absolutely loved, they realized that their old world ways belonged in the old world and embraced all of my non-Asian girlfriends after that.

All of this talk and LoveThem's links remind me of a book called Yellow: Race in America beyond black and white.

One of the thoughts of the book is that racial tensions over dating relate to an implicit sexism still running throughout our society. That a male having sex with a woman is seen to 'dominate' that woman, an egregious viewpoint. But that said it affects the topic at hand since it's often viewed as acceptable for a white guy to go out with an asian girl, but not an asian guy (or insert any other ethnicity) to go out with a white girl. Which is to say that the acceptability of which race goes out with whom are tied to outmoded and sexist power structures. It shouldn't matter.
