exactly. Audi are not considered luxury brand in China, just another toyota really. So it's laughable guys here elevate vw with leather seats into some kind of elite status. Mostly your just paying for a brand image, status symbol when buying any luxury car.
So are they priced the same as a Toyota there? Is buick more expensive in China?

surprisingly yes!

also in Japan , Nissan is luxury brand - being the emperor's designated carriage much like caddilac in America. while Honda is an average or even below average brand. In NA Honda > Nissan. Its all in the marketting boys..

Exactly, while you guys admire European cars. Europeans admire American cars. In Asia, American cars are more expansive than European cars too. Audi a6 are so common in beijing they are used mostly as taxis. If you own a buick, you are much cooler than audi or even bmw.

your shelling out so much for an audi a4 here is pathetic.
LOL. You have to love the logic here. If you were in Asia then blah, blah, blah... so because of this, do what Asians do - and if you don't do what Asians do, you're pathetic.

In Asia, or in China in specific, you could be executed for looking up a site just like this. Better kill us all. In China they sensor Google. Better do that here too.

The fact is we live in North America, and we pay more for German cars and appreciate them more here. End of story. If I was in Asia then sure I'd drool over a Buick, but I'm not there I'm here.

Somehow, I think the Lexus will still outlast two Impala lifetimes.
That's debatable.
With proper PM American vehicles last a long time now.
I've had no problems with the longevity of American vehicles big and small.
Usually would put ~100,000 miles on them before trading em in for a new one.....;)

And still have a higher resale value in the end. Of course you could wait a year until the Impala has a $5000 incentive to move them off the lot.

Don't get me wrong, I love true European performance cars too! Just not those entry level wanna-bes! VW sold in NA are made in Mexico! If you are just driving an entry level European car, such as A4, 3-series, and god forbid C-class!! you are not fooling anyone here ! you are just a 9-5 cubicle slave trying hard to fit into rich boy's club! What you do with all that european handling and performance grinding 5km/h on DV-Parkinglot or bumper to bumper King St. to your cubicle farm every day! If you are in working class, it's better just drive a cheap car, or better yet, ride the rocket! With the money saved, at least one day you can afford to retire or be mortgage free!

The high end of the European market (A8, S-class, 7-series, 911) are a step above anything you can buy from the American or Japanese firms... it's simply a fact. The US firms are focused toward the middle of the market.

I can't fathom buying an Impala, not because it's not a good car (I'm sure it's fine for 100k or so) it's just too damn boring/generic for my tastes.

having owned German, Japanese and ameican cars, I can tells German cars are the most expensive to care and maintain. Japanese engines are reliable but lacks torque at low rpm, iand feels too light like flying in a thin alluminum can. Now,
I drive a jeep. It's cheap, reliable, and not boring. and very rugged! most of all I don't cry a river over a scratch or dent.

You have to admit the quality pecking order is German > Japanese > American ..... the price goes the opposite way but then you'd expect that.

Indeed they are!
Had a friend who loved his Mercedes Sedan up until it needed its first oil change a few years back. They must be done at the Mercedes dealer to keep his warr from being voided. It cost him ~$250 for a simple oil change!!!...
He worried down the road what repairs would run once the warr expired.

Told him I recently changed my own oil & filter, back then, at a cost of $5.50.....;)

^^From what I understand, many of the big German V8s use a lot of oil (6+litres) and require synthetic oil. That combination tends to be quite expensive but at least the synthetic lasts a bit longer than conventional.
Not just that. their parts age and break down just like any other car, and costs 2 - 3 times more than American or Japanese. The alternator of my late bimmer died after 8 years, and costed $1500 + tax to replace just an alternator. Not to mention 5 days of waiting for parts to be shipped from Germany.

You are most likely spending at least $60 to 120 k for a car with a German V8 and you are worried about an extra $10 in oil twice a year when you change it?

Exactly my point! If you are a poor 9-5 office slave. don't buy a luxury Euro car just to show off! The maintenance down the road will cost you!

Between here and there.

Audis in China are not the same as the ones we get here or in Europe. Yes, I've been to the commercial centres in China and see them everywhere too. Those Audis are manufactured in China, specifically for the Chinese market using lower end materials, production quality is less precise, don't conform to Western safety standards and have less features and gadgets as NA/Euro Audis. They are aimed at the entry to mid level sedan market, ie Camrys, Accords, Altimas, Sonatas, etc. while having a German badge. Buicks on the other hand are crap, regardless of where you buy them. Some of the most boring cars on the market. GM should have killed the brand along with Pontiac, Hummer, etc.

As for your taxi analogy, Mercedes E-Classes, BMW 5-Series and Audi A6 are used as taxis in Europe, the Middleast, South Africa, etc. Does that diminish their quality and status? Debatable.
