Excellent movie. The absolute terror on their faces knowing they had to leave the relative safety of the boats.......The way everything goes silent when the bomb goes off,,,,,,,,then slowly screams and bullets flying start to become clearer...... Horrifyingly well done.

The opening scene is awesome on surround sound. A few years back I lived in a complex with a veteran who was there. He said a lot of guys drowned before they hit the beach.

Another very good WW2 series is Band of Brothers. I believe It was done by the same director as Saving Private Ryan
I think one of the reasons I find WW2 movies so interesting is my father spent 4 years in France and Italy and saw a lot of action. He would never talk about it.

'The Longest Day' (1962) is excellent; best film depicting the Normandy landings I've seen.

My Dad was originally supposed to land on D-day. "Unfortunately", he picked up an infection in his foot so missed the boat, so to speak. He arrived about 10 days later, well after the fighting was over. He only spoke of it once to me, but apparently there were piles of bloated corpses everywhere, waiting to be buried. I think he was 24 years old, and a newly minted commissioned officer. It made an impression on him that lasted until the day he died.

I know a couple of WW II veterans who refuse to watch that opening scene, it is so accurate, horrific and powerful.
