Why would a company who's O/S software is in 3 of 4 new devices sold want with Apple, a company not only lagging behind in innovation (no widgets, no NFC, small screen, etc, etc) but currently putting in new features that have been copied from Android (pull down activity menu, small tablets, LTE,...etc, etc) ?
For one, they're able to make a product people are willing to pay for... how many people have actually paid Google anything?

As you must be painfully aware now - the Android phones are not free and in the Galaxy series priced about the same as iPhone yet more people are willing to buy Android than Apple so I'm not sure how you still grasp hold of that tenuous thread of logic that Apple is superior in any aspect to Google who is still marching ahead.

OTB's point is Android isn't very profitable for Google so far.

Apple and Samsung earn over 100% of smartphone profits - Google earns more from iOS than they do from Android. Google doesn't have any products (nexus 7 would be an exception) that people are willing to pay for. These are simply facts.

That doesn't mean Android isn't a good product it simply means Google has not learned how to monitise their products beyond ad revenue. Googles real mobile innovation isn't Android but the excellent web services it produces.

apple has taken a page from RIM. think you are top of the market and never update or change your product on any level until people get tired of the same thing over and over and by the time you realize you made a mistake it's to late. solid plan.

A minor caveat ... Google owns Motorola so they do have other products. They bought Motorola for up coming patent face off with Apple and LG is building the next Nexus so I'm curious just what plans they have for Motorola.

We'll see if anyone will pay for those products, I'm pretty comfortable with my position that a vast majority of Google revenue (90+%) isn't people paying for google products or services but it simply ad revenue from traffic.... which is a great business model.

And then there is Q4 in the US....

Apple Becomes Largest Mobile Phone Vendor in United States in Q4 2012

February 1, 2013 03:50 nmawston

According to our Wireless Device Strategies (WDS) service, mobile phone shipments grew 4 percent annually to reach 52 million units in the United States during the fourth quarter of 2012. Apple became the number one mobile phone vendor for the first time ever, capturing a record 34 percent market share.
Mobile phone shipments grew 4 percent annually from 50.2 million units in Q4 2011 to 52.0 million in the United States in Q4 2012. The growth was driven by robust demand among consumers for 4G smartphones and 3G feature phones. However, despite a solid fourth-quarter performance, the US mobile phone market had previously contracted 16 percent for the first three quarters of 2012 due to economic uncertainty and tighter carrier upgrade policies. As a result, US mobile phone shipments fell 11 percent from 186.8 million units in 2011 to 166.9 million in 2012.

We estimate Apple shipped 17.7 million mobile phones for a record 34 percent share of the United States market in the fourth quarter of 2012. This was up sharply from 12.8 million units shipped and 25 percent share in Q4 2011. Apple has become the number one mobile phone vendor by volume in the United States for the first time ever. Apple’s success has been driven by its popular ecosystem of iPhones and App Store, generous carrier subsidies, and extensive marketing around the new iPhone 5 model. Samsung shipped 16.8 million mobile phones in the United States, for 32 percent share, during Q4 2012. This was a good performance from Samsung, as its market share rose 5 points from 27 percent a year earlier, but it was not enough to hold off a surging Apple. Samsung had been the number one mobile phone vendor in the US since 2008, and it will surely be keen to recapture that title in 2013 by launching improved new models such as the rumored Galaxy S4.

LG remains the third largest player in the US mobile phone market. We estimate LG shipped 4.7 million mobile phones for 9 percent share of the United States market in Q4 2012, dipping from 6.9 million units and 14 percent share a year earlier. LG struggled to compete with an Apple and Samsung onslaught in the high-growth smartphone sub-category last year, but LG will be aiming to fight back this year with new and improved models like the Optimus G 4G LTE with Android.

like I said stock price doesn't care who is the biggest share now. It only reflects then future expectation.
Is that why Apple has a larger market cap than Google and Samsung combined?

why did apple go from near 1000$ a share to low 400$'s ?
Well if you consider $705 is "near $1000" and $455 as "low $400s"...

I think the concern is future growth rate (law of big numbers) and margin as the growth goes down market. Apple has skimmed the cream from the top of the smartphone and tablet market, their only growth move is to go down market - that drives margin concerns.

Do consider, even at $455 that Apple is worth more than Google and Samsung combined - and Samsung does a lot more than smartphones.....

Facts are your friends if you'll listen to them.

So do you think Blackberry can make a come back?
It already has, not a fan but blackberry was smart to downsize they where ahead of the curve, Everyone felt that they where going to crash and burn. Than Apple and Samsung started laying off the problem is that both Apple and Samsung had more aggressive targets. Apple has stared to bleed and Samsung will hold on longer, since their company relies on multiple products. The same can be said with Apple but where are they going to go to a $49 iPhone. If they do it will escalate their failure the problem is that Apple is trying to sell their phone to a saturated market with many of their loyal customers content with the previous iphone model. Android has too many options and for those that are blackberry fans. The answer can be found on BB10.
