This thought occured to me over the past couple of nights when I've had trouble sleeping.

When I was younger - far younger - my answer would have been 'Wizard of Oz' or maybe 'The Ten Commandments' as they were annual rituals.

When I was in my twenties, I probably would have said 'Casablanca' as I'm both a film buff and a bit of an incurable romantic (as a few SPs know).

Now that I'm a little bit (ahem) older, I'd probably say it's something like 'The Bourne Identity'. Something about that movie (and no - I don't look like Matt Damon), everytime I turn it on at one am in the morning, I know I'm going to be watching it to the very end at 3am, my morning schedule and work be damned.

Anyway, what are the movies you watch over and over and over?

And please let's skip the porn for once.

Oh, I should also add 'Citizen Kane' which I've seen a trillion times, but to be honest, it's become an academic exercise in film making and doesn't engage me the way it used to.

For me it's The Maltese Falcon.

I really like heist movies and can watch them over and over. There's a nifty little faced paced flick filmed in Toronto called Foolproof that I have on DVD and have watched at least a dozen times.

Ronin is also great - I've watched it many times, listened to the commentary tracks. And Sexy Beast. Ben Kingsley is incredible, and the movie has an amazing script, some of the dialog is almost like poetry. Brutal British poetry, but still...

Don: Shut up, cunt. You louse. You got some fuckin' neck ain't you. Retired? Fuck off, you're revolting. Look at your suntan, it's leather, it's like leather man, your skin. We could make a fucking suitcase out of you. Like a crocodile, fat crocodile, fat bastard. You look like fucking Idi Amin, you know what I mean? Stay here? You should be ashamed of yourself. Who do you think you are? King of the castle? Cock of the walk?
[He gut-punches Gal]
Don: What you think this is the wheel of fortune? You think you can make your dough and fuck off? Leave the table? Thanks Don, see you Don, off to sunny Spain now Don, fuck off Don. Lying in your pool like a fat blob laughing at me, you think I'm gonna have that? You really think I'm gonna have that, ya ponce. All right, I'll make it easy for you. God knows you're fucking trying. Are you gonna do the job? It's not a difficult question, are you gonna do the job, yes or no?
And every Christmas since it first came out on VHS I watch Die Hard and at least one of the sequels.

I've watched El Topo probably a couple of dozen time or more since the late 70s/early 80s- in rep theatres, on a bootleg videotape rented from a little place on Bathurst a couple of decades ago, and most recently on the long-awaited box set. Also in every state of consciousness available. I remember taking mushrooms and going to see it at the Bloor cinema, LOL. And back when I played AD&D I even designed a campaign based on El Topo's desert journey. :hippie:

On a lighter note, Big Night is a movie about 2 Italian brothers who own a restaurant. Great cast and the preparation and dinner scenes are homages to great food. This is movie that is inspiring to anyone who likes to cook, and can be viewed over and over.

And for comedies, I couldn't count the number of times I've seen Peter Sellers in The Party but still find hearing 'birdy num num' will crack me up.

MattRoxx -

Good choices -

I've probably seen the orignal 'Die Hard' endless times - maybe even more than 'The Bourne Identity'.

And in reality, I don't rush out to see the latest action flick, but both of those are so well done.

Also 'Ronin' is one of those movies - if I turn it on in the first ten minutes or the last ten minutes, I'm sucked in.

Love, love, love 'Big Night' - never seen 'El Topo' but it's now on my TDL list (for movies that is).

Yeah Goodfellas for me too. I don't own the DVD or have it downloaded but they run it on cable quite often and I'll always watch a few minutes of it while flipping around the channels. Another one like this that I'll always watch a few minutes of is the Clint Eastwood western Unforgiven.

So many great scenes.

What's the colour of the boathouse at Hereford?

El Topo is pretty fucked up, dude. I can pretty much guarantee you haven't seen anything like it before.

For heist/caper movies, you should also check out:
the original Italian Job, with Michael Caine.
Confidence, with Rachel Weisz and...well isn't she enough reason to watch a movie?
Rififi. Yeah it's foreign but it set the template for a lot of caper movies to follow.

On a completely different note - Boss Nass - I love '2001'.

I actually lost my virginity after '2001' (the movie) with my high school sweetheart). Note: This was not during the movie, but afterwards and couldn't watch the movie for years because of the association. To clarify: Not that Kier Dullea gives me an erection.

The original 'Italian Job' - another flick I have to watch as soon as I catch a glimpse.

Made me want to visit Europe when I was younger and while the reboot was very stylish and slick, you can't beat the original for it's sense of fun and cleverness - and what an ending!
