It's nuts, as it lists so many, how the hell would you remember them.
I think in general it is the ministry's positiion that if you don't know, dont use it. Just like when people complain about bird hunting and that there are different rules for different species, if you can't tell the difference, don't kill it.

Have any of you ever been asked to show your fishing license while you were fishing? How strongly is licensing enforced?

I think it's insane that you have to pay the government to be able to fish, but that's another topic.

It's just another form of revenue to use for the MNR. I just think having to get a license for each province is crazier. If you on a trip you have to buy multiple permits. There should be a national permit option.

They can and do enforce licensing laws. Though numbers of conservation officers across the province have decreased significantly over the years. But police can also ask you to provide your licence, and fine you if you don't. Cops have often targeted busy fishing spots (eg credit river, steelhead season, salmon run) COs also have tremendous power to search and seize your gear/ boat/ vehicle you might be using to fish / hunt illegally best to stick to the rules. From what I understand a lot of the licnce revenue gets put back into managing fisheries (stocking programs etc). I doagree it is silly that if a guy out of the blue wants to take his kid fishing that he will need to get a licence somewhere on a Sunday afternoon (tho at least you can do online now).

I've been checked twice, and I would willingly be checked a lot more. The COs are woefully understaffed, and there is a lot of illegal fishing that they can't catch. That's why I have the MNR Tips line on speed dial, if the offender doesn't stop after I apprise them of the regulations I get someone with authority to do it.

For river trout and steelies and browns off piers on the lakes, I use nickel and blue Little Cleos. Those little gizmos are irresistible to trout. I once had five hits in five consecutive casts from river bows a couple of years ago on the Maitland River. Very highly recommended for all fish.

Can I catch crayfish any time of year or only during fishing season? Instead of buying them from fish store to feed my pet catfish I want to catch them using legal trap.

Legal all year everywhere except Algonquin Provincial Park. But they cannot be legally transported overland, they must be used in the same body of water. So that screws your collection, unless you want to obtain a bait seller's licence, I believe they can transport them.

Boss, I did read that it cannot be transported over land and must be used in the same body of water, but I thought that only applies if one intends to use them as bait.

For instance, I think you're allowed to trap them and bring them home to eat or even keep them as pets if you wanted to.

I also read somewhere that nobody has been allowed to sell crayfish as bait in Ontario for several years now.

Since when do you need a license to fish? Shit, I used to fish up at the cottage without one.

As for lures, when I used to fish, rapala, daredevil, jitterbugs, and live bait.

I also studied an excellent fishing book when I was bored up at the cottage. I also have used the word Walleye in lieu of the pickerel. Man they have little teeth. An old neighbour would always troll. Once he caught a huge pickerel which he left hooked at the end of his dock. By morning, it had been eaten by some predator (muskrat?).

Good point, I've eaten them a few times, never thought about that. Not sure about not being allowed to sell them, but if so that may be because of the invasive rusty crayfish, which got here sometime in the 80s if I recall correctly. If someone doesn't do a good job of checking their catch they could sell some and that way introduce them to yet another water body.

For at least 20 years now. Better get one, the penalties for not having one can be quite severe.

Muskrats are strictly vegetarian. Probably a snapping turtle, they are notorious for raiding stringers.

Ok, makes sense. So, when anglers use perch as baitfish, do they rig the hook in the tail and reel it in backwards so the bass can swallow it head first?
Generally no. Bait fish are under normal conditons hooked through the lips. there are times when they can be hooked through the back. When fishing with large suckers they can be double hooked one through the lips and one through the back.

Or in the case of cut bait, its only a piece of bait fish used. The lure provides the action and the fish is there for scent.
Giver, the only time I used cut bait was in BC downriggng for Salmon. I watched the guide cut the herring into cut bait and then tried to do it myself and totally fucked it up. If the herring is not cut properly it is useless.
