With summer coming and new plans on the table, I'm putting together a new fishing kit. Not planning on spending lots of money but want to try new lures, trying to get away from live bait for a number of reasons.

Of course I plan to catch some of the biggest fish you've ever seen, but when I'm awake, I hope to catch a lot of bass, river trout, and walleye. I'll save the the arctic char and the really dumb grayling for another time.

What is your favorite lure(s) and for what fish?

I'll throw just about anything out there at different times. I love topwater bass action, so things like Jitterbugs or Chug Bugs are always with me. Drop-shotting is also fun, and I use Xzone Slammers for that, mainly because they're locally made, Mark Kulik is a great guy, and they work. Rapalas are a great lure for almost anything. For pike I've had success with spoons like the DareDevle and Five of Diamonds, quick retrieve alternating with a flutter down, the pike will often hit it on the drop. Haven't had much luck with spinner baits, but I haven't spent much time out there lately so that may change as I get more time on the water.

Best all round- mepps aglia, or comet (ESP black fury)
Largemouth- plastic worms - dark colours (black, purple, brown)
Smallmouth- plastic grub jigs (eg mister twister style)
Pike/ Musky - big mepps (#5 or greater- musky killer)
Salmon, browns, steelies from shore (eg the pier)- lil Cleo spoons
River trout - preferably flyfish, but if you have to spinfish- size 0 or1 mepps.
Walleye- mr twister type plastic grub jig, Or rapala shad rap.

These choices are basically what I would chose if I only could pick ONE lure for each species. I think these overall would be the most productive, but may not catch the biggest of each species.

And yes, the real official name of the fish is walleye. Unfortunately we Canadians (mostly ontarians) have this one wrong. Pickerel are a completely different fish, smaller members of the pike family (the work pickerel actually is derived from a term for a diminutive pike).

I've only been fishing , mainly for bass, for 2 years, and have had some success with the 6" plastic worms, texas rigged. I'm interested in the mepps aglia, or comet (ESP black fury) lure that you guys are talking about. Are they good for bass too? Isn't it a pain to have to keep casting and reeling in? I guess you can't use them in weedy areas?

Any lure will work. One needs a good assortment of lures in various sizes and colours in their tackle box. The time of year, day the weather all pay a big part in the type of lure you use. It's best to have a good assortment and have doubles and triples of your best working lures in case you lose one.
If your unsure go to your nearest tackle shop, these guys can point youu in the right direction with some good stuff and staying within your budget. Bait shops near your cottage would be a good resource too. They usually know what the best tackle for that area is and they would stock that tackle too.

Own a bunch of different rods and reels to switch up many varried lures on any given day. I love the choice and different options they provide. That said, if I had to pick only one lure to go out with it would be whatever colour and weight blue fox vibrax spinning lure I thought would work best that day. I have caught everything under the water with that lure using different cast and retrieve techniques.

If you had only one lure to use it would be a jig. They come in various sizes, 1/8,1/4,3/8/1/2 ounce etc. Nice thing about using a jig is it can be used with live bait normally a minnow, or it can be used just with a plastic grub. You can cast it, jig it, it can be used while anchored, or drifting. The jig can be used in rivers, or lakes. It is the most versatile and simple lure on the market. GB

Beat me to it. If I could only have one lure in my box, it would be a white jig.

Yep, jigs are simplicity for all levels of fishermen. No freshwater or saltwater fish will fail to hit a jig. Best Walleye lure around. Great for Lakers, Pike, Panfish, Crappie, damn its time to go fishing!!

These are the two most productive "lures" you will ever get your hands on. Fish eat bugs, so you should feed them bugs.

It all depends on the style of fishing you do, I like to troll. I know a lake where there is a stream entering the lake with warmer water that comes from a lake at a higher elevation. This higher lake is very shallow and the sun warms the water up before it flows into the bigger colder lake. Trout are like to have precise temperatures. They hang around where the warmer water enters the lake. There is a 200 meter stretch that I troll and get a fish or two with each pass. I use a 24-36 in gang troll, I have also made a miniature 12 in. troll with sea shell spoons when I cast.

In your naughty wet dreams
Whenever I go fishing we usually try and catch some small perch and then use a treble on them to bait for bass... Not sure if it's legal but if I get caught I'll just have to plead ignorance and bat my eyelashes lol... One of my favorite memories of my dad were the bass fish frys up north at the cottage can't help but feel a little down everytime I think of it

As far as I know it is legal to use perch as bait. And from what I've heard batting eyelashes doesn't carry much weight with a CO.
