Being careful while picking up locals in Havana or sp's that are of age & some likely to be underage in Havana is "Terrible Advice", while Cuba is full of tourist who are willing to practically throw it at you for free.

GYPSY you're either reading my reply wrong or you're in need of some help
You don't need to be careful picking up locals in Havana. I don't know why you think that. You need to get out more!

Who wants a pasty white tourist girl when there are hot latinas for the taking?

Amen (although the one gal I settled on for repeat dates was a stunning white Latina).

Thanks Fruity Hare. That information is very useful, although not exactly what I wanted to hear. I was hoping that things has loosened up somewhat, but it doesn't sound like it at all.

Well, I think I may go anyway, as I have other reasons for going. But I was thinking of reserving some extra time for these extra curricular activities. From what you describe, I may still do it, but maybe not so much extra time.

Thanks again.
I posted a thread about my recent trip in the Lounge. Don Draper posted plenty of information and caveats. My view is why bang tourists when there are exotic and beautiful Cuban women to do that with? Why do you go to a foreign country for? Indulge in the women of Cuba who have different attitudes than those back home.

I thought it was fairly obvious what I want to know from what I said in my first post, but maybe not. Let me try again.

Since I am somewhat acquainted with Havana, I'd like to know which way the political winds are currently blowing with regard to meeting ladies. Are they approachable, or are they so scared shitless that if they talk with me they will end up in jail. I am more interested in non pros than hanging out in a club til 2 am checking out the pros.

I am also interested in any information about meeting ladies outside of Havana. I won't be staying at resorts. I'll be looking for casa particulares. So again, the question is mostly related to police presence and how that will affect success rate for meeting non pros. Information about what cities/towns and what costs to anticipate would be useful. Costs, I expect, can vary quite widely, but some ballpark numbers would be good.
The real pros are those that hang out at a hotel. The club girls that hang out at clubs are young amateurs so to speak. Yes, they are on the hustle but you can still have enchanting times with them.

In each of my two previous trips, I was lucky to find beautiful and intelligent girls (at the clubs) who I ended up seeing exclusively for the better part of my trip without going to the clubs. There were a few that I would've 'dated' had I met them 1st (one worked for the government and spoke English - she was a single mom, mature and strikingly beautiful with an ass that you would've died for).

However, as Don Draper likes to do, you can meet girls at restaurants, outdoor cafes, shopping malls, and even staff from the Mercado. Not every gal will date you, but as a tourist/foreigner, many Cuba women who are attached or possibly married, will date you and sleep with you. It might mean dinner and dancing, or a nice gift.

Don't be holding hands walking with your chica on a public street or be seen by a cop in a taxi full of chicas (they will get into trouble, not you unless they are under 18 but you can ask for their I.D. coupled with your judgement as to how mature they act).

I've officially registered chicas at my hotel to sleep with (they must show their I.D. to get a guest card) and greased security guards, some of whom ask for their I.D. as collateral while they're at the hotel (like an owner of a 'casa particulare' might ask) but returned to them when they leave.

The Fruity Hare is also very familiar with Cuba and he is a gent who did me a small favour when he returned there after I visited.

The convertible peso is basically the same rate as the US dollar
The current exchange is around $1 CAD to 1.01 convertible peso

Would you happen to know the current exchange rate?
Apparently this is the most accurate currency converter you will find on the internet:

http://www.bc.gov.cu/Espanol/tipo_cambio_METROPOLITANO.asp

And a little backgound in English from the same site:

http://www.bc.gov.cu/English/home.asp

And this is some info copied from Trip Advisor:

On Monday 14th March 2011 Cuba's Central Bank devaluated the Convertible Peso or CUC by 8% against all foreign currencies. This measure now pegs the CUC at 1 x 1 with the US Dollar where it used to be pre April 2005.

The convertible peso (CUC) is a closed currency, which means it cannot be purchased outside of Cuba. You can change your money at the Cadeca (Money Exchange Bureau) at the Airport on landing in Cuba, at a Cuban bank or at your hotel.

If you reside in the UK you should take Sterling, Canadians should take Canadian dollars and if you are from a European destination that uses the Euro, then take Euros. Clean, untorn bills in good condition with no writing on them. Please note that Scottish notes are not acceptable.

The exchange rate varies on a daily basis and can be checked at this link which, unfortunately is very slow to load:

bc.gov.cu/Espanol/tipo_cambio_METROPOLITANO.…

Please note this is the ONLY accurate site for Cuban Convertible Pesos. All the other internet currency exchange sites (like coinmill.com, xe.com, oanda.com, x-rates.com, etc.) are useless for real budgeting because they only give mid-market rates, ignoring the buy/sell costs that you'll be charged at the bank or Cadeca in Cuba.

Where to exchange your money:

1.) The best exchange rate is a Bank.

2.) The next best exchange rate as it any Cadeca. A Cadeca (Casas de Cambio which means House of Exchange) is a government exchange facility. They are located at many resorts and hotels, and at locations all over the Island.

3.) The next best rate is at the Airport Cadeca.

4.) The worst rate can potentially be over-the-counter at any hotel or resort because the rate is not regulated by the government.

On a 1 or 2 week all-inclusive holiday the difference between Options 1, 2 & 3 is immaterial.

Why Cuba?

gotta say the more I read about hobbying in cuba...more I think why?

Why not go to say Costa Rica----open, legal, easy, no hassles...or from what I read (haven't had pleasure yet) the DR where it also seems pretty hassle free....and basically same great latino women...

Or is the "cat and mouse" and scare of being busted part of the thrill??

Because Cuba is Cuba.

If you're only interested in hobbying, you don't have to travel anywhere to do that.

sure true...and I have only recently started to enjoy the mixing of holiday with hobbying...been to Costa, going to Thailand, want to go to Columbia, the DR..maybe some other places (the clubs in Germany) but why cuba...sure cuba is cuba but Saudi Arabia is Saudi Arabia...but sure as heck ain't going there to holiday/hobby (and I am sure there are pros there--there are pros everywhere!)

So is it just that in Cuba the edge is exciting? or is that you can score semi-pros there more easily? I think you have been there a lot Don---so what is it that make Cuba worth the risk?

Firstly, I see no sort of risk going to Cuba. It's safer than most countries since Tourism is their major bread and butter.

Costa Rica, Colombia, Thailand and yes, Saudi Arabia are there for the country that they are. They won't be changing anytime soon. However, the days in Cuba are numbered. This is a country on the precipice of change. Major change. The Castro regime is set to fall any day now and the Cuba that exists will cease to be so. I despise Castro's politics. he has done nothing to better his country out of cantankerous ego and pride. Inadvertingly, he has frozen time and with it the epoch of a Cuba that once existed, you can hear echoes of and maybe even see if you open your eyes. Isolated from the rest of Latin America and (thankfully) U.S. Citizens, Canadians and Europeans have a paradise at their reach with the sand quickly falling to the bottom of the clock. The people are sweet and helpful whilst the girls - with their Euro/Afro/Indigenous combination - are some of the most beautiful creatures on earth with a sweet disposition to match.

I hope that sheds some insight, Peter.

Nicely put DD.

Reminds me of the nostalgia I'll always carry for my first trip to Thailand in the mid 80s. I caught the last bit of an era that's gone forever. I still love Thailand, but my heart always breaks a bit when I think of how it is now compared the way it still was when I found it.

Well put Don...

And don't get be wrong, I would love to visit Cuba as "just a tourist" and you are likely right--now is the time to see it before it opens up and becomes just another americanized tourist destination

But of course, I was we are speaking of more than being a regular tourist...and from reading some of the posts about Cuba here and other places--seems like you have to sneak around, the girls can get it trouble, issues with hotels..etc...seems like a hassle compared to the legal (like CR) or near-legal (Thailand) places out there...but maybe some of those hassles are overblown...

Will hopefully be going again there this week, just hoping for a decent price for a 9 day trip. The price has really jumped the last few days, must be due to people going away for the long week end.

When I was in Guanabo last month, the police presence wasn't as bad as it was late last year, but girls still nervous, not wanting to travel in the same taxi together. Were you at one of the hotels or private house?

As for your name, there is one girl that hangs out with the skinny blonde around town, I thought she looked very Asian, slim but nice surprise when the top came off.

Unfortunately I can't leave until Friday, trying to extend the return until Sunday. Cubana sold out economy seats, Hola package price went from $314 plus tax, to $408 plus tax, to $1048 plus tax! The others were around $400 and change plus, now $615 plus tax.

I am waiting for a quote from Sunwing on 9 days, usually just take one way back with Cubana, but business class is over $300 one way now!

Some of the security at Tropicoco are ok, some not. Apparently last year a tourist took a girl upstairs, claimed she stole something, called the cops and the girl and security were busted. So now some won't take the chance. I took one girl up during the daytime, she left ahead of me, by the time I got to the restaurant at the corner, she was talking to another tourist who introduced me to her. Pretended not to know each other, half an hour later, bumped into her in the elevator, going to his room! Some girls are very busy!!

I know someone who has an old Lada, he works as a private taxi driver. One night he took me back to pick up something from the hotel, just outside we were stopped by cops, since he wasn't supposed to have a foreigner in his car. Luckily he argued that we were just going to pick up a shirt that I had brought for him.

There's always a chance that the car will be stopped and the girls are usually rightfully scared, even in licenced cars.

With the Asian looking one, she was from Havana and wasn't familar with casas in Guanabo. Jumped on a horse buggy, he took us to a house, afterwards asked the owner how much... at first I thought he said 50CUC, turned out to be 5 CUC, best deal of the trip!! :)
