The explanation I have is from the 17th. century. When ships went into port, they had to fire a signal cannon to alert the authorities to send a doctor to inspect the ship for disease, and a tax collector to inspect the cargo to assess taxes. When the tax collector inspected a barrel or a crate, he would place a OK on the barrel in chalk to indicate it had been inspected. OK = Oll Korect ( Dutch corrupted )
