The Canadian Press

OTTAWA-The 1980s song “Money for Nothing” by the British rock band Dire Straits has been deemed unacceptable for play on Canadian radio.

In a ruling released Wednesday, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council says the song contravenes the human rights clauses of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ Code of Ethics and Equitable Portrayal Code.

A listener to radio station CHOZ-FM in St. John’s, N.L., complained last year that the song includes the word “faggot” in its lyrics and is discriminatory to gays.

The broadcaster argued that the song had been played countless times since its release decades ago and has won music industry awards.

A CBSC panel concluded that the word “faggot,” even if once acceptable, has evolved to become unacceptable in most circumstances.

The panel noted that “Money for Nothing” would be acceptable for broadcast if suitably edited.

"Chicks for free" should be censored as well, change it to "Women for free with the understanding it's a one time mutually agreed upon arrangement".

That's OK by me, I always thought it was a crappy song.
(I turn channel if it's played on the radio)

Oh well.
I guess the faggots have won another battle even though they call each other faggots.

How much freedom of expression can you have if you are afraid of hurting someone's feelings. This song is hardly a hate campaign against gays. I love the song as it portrays a couple of hard working stiffs looking at the lifestyle of rockers. Maybe I just relate because there are some hip-hop/ rock artists who are ugly arrogant little shits with hordes of money and their chicks for free. I'll wager that who ever made the decision never listen to the song.

Have these guys at CBSC ever listened to hip-hop ? Well thank God our government is protecting us from the evils of the sung word.

Or any other democracy in the world including the United States. There is no place with absolute freedom of expression.

That is why Stern and others had to move to satellite radio. To escape American censorship.

I'm pretty sure that song is played on radio stations across this great land...... although in fairness to Iran it's probably the "and my chicks for free" that they would find offensive.

I am sure it is, but many other things are not. "Money for Nothing" is not the problem, the problem is bad censorship which does occur even in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

Wonder if the guy who complained knows Mark Knopfler is gay.
