The Québec Court of Appeal ruled today, that common-law spouses are discriminated against by the Québec Civil Code because they are deprived of a right to alimony that married couples have.

The decision could affect more than one million Quebecers, and pave the way for common-law spouses to obtain alimony when they split from their partner.

It is shocking to me that over 60 percent of children born in Québec in the past eight years were born out of wedlock!

There is a simple solution to this problem.
Just make sure that she earns more money than you do.

Most provinces already have alimony for common-law, Quebec was a hold out. To me, you should be allowed to negotiate your own living together agreement, not have it imposed by the government.

Just make sure your SO makes more money than you and then you're set. She can't afford to set you adrift. just be thankful we don't live in Britain.

If you don't want to pay, don"t play. When I was single, I always kept a separate residence, thus not common-law. When I married, I married another professional...wages about equal. If you are smart, and know the game you won't get burned. Legally when you enter a relationship, you have responsibilities. Get used to it.

I thought the main reasons couples went the common-law route instead of just getting married was to prevent alimony when they broke up. If alimony is payable why not just get married lol? Seriously, what is the advantage of living common-law instead of getting married?

Of course I could see it if it was impossible to divorce without an act of parliament like in the good old days, then living together gave one the right to end it and marry someone else, even if one owed the common-law partner money. But in the modern no fault divorce culture, that isn't so much an issue.

Right here. But wish I was there!
Quebec is different

Quebec operates under civil law, not common law as the other provinces do. So the rules can be, and are, different than we may be used to in Ontario.

BTW, Common-law unions are most prevalent among young people and couples living in Quebec, where more than 30 per cent of all families are common law.

The Quiet Revolution certainly did throw out the baby with the bath water!

the hobby needs more capitalism
That tends to be only women who consider themselves a 9 or a 10.
Not really. Women will always look out of their league when considering a provider. It`s all relative. A 9 may end up with a Bay St banker clearing $200k. But a 6 that works part time at Wal-Mart would up end with some programmer clearing $55k.

Why is it only women that you think do this?
I remember a few threads on here about this year alone about picking up girls who work in retail. That`s minimum wage territory.

In fact, here`s one such thread - https://terb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?230331-Picking-up-some-gal-at-Pizza-Hut

Most guys don`t care. As long as she`s cute, is a cool chick and has sex frequently, most guys would gladly enter into such a relationship regardless of her socio-economic status.

I'm reminded of a old joke.

Q: What is a woman's four favorite animals?

A: A mink in the closet, a jaguar in the garage, a tiger in the bedroom and the jackass that paid for it all!

Never be the jackass. Always hedge.

I`m going to guess from Zardoz, but I could be wrong.

I know a guy that make about 60G's, not a handsome lad, dresses like a slob and own 3 or 4 clunkers that enjoys driving on various days of the week, but he owns about 150+ acres of prime land in the countryside, 2 residences and four rental properties. You'd never guess it. I don't think any of his girlfriends have been aware of it either. Oh ya, he's also avery personable guy. Never without a girlfriend in the upper quintile. He's not unique. Your hypothesis doesn't always hold up. Something about book/cover.
