Waste of time and money.
What are they going to do? Put him in jail? Please.
He took steroids. Period. So he doesn't go to the HOF and everybody yells, "liar. liar, pants on fire" for the rest of his life.
As a society we need to get over ourselves and stop caring about this crap, Clemens was a baseball pitcher for God's sake, and put the people in jail who actually deserve it - like Conrad Black, Bernie Madoff, and Tony Hayward.

I'm pretty sure lying to congress IS a crime in the US.

Now wether is should or shouldn't be a crime is another argument.

I disagree.

HE was called up.

He could have done what McGuire did and say "Yes..I did steroids"

HE DID NOT!!!

Under oath, he on several occasions lied to congress and obstructed them, thereby committing perjury. This perjury also shed negative slanderous light on McNamme who had conflicting evidence!!!

This has nothing to do with Steroids. He could have been asked anything about any topic...but UNDER OATH,,,,he MUST tell the truth...or take the 5th!

He did it for selfish reasons!!!! To get in the HALL!!!

Now he is only gonna get a prison HALL!!

Mark McGuire never admitted to using steroids to congress. Quote from his testimony:

"Asking me or any other player to answer questions about who took steroids in front of television cameras will not solve the problem. If a player answers 'No,' he simply will not be believed; if he answers 'Yes,' he risks public scorn and endless government investigations....My lawyers have advised me that I cannot answer these questions without jeopardizing my friends, my family, and myself. I will say, however, that it remains a fact in this country that a man, any man, should be regarded as innocent unless proven guilty."

On January 11, 2010 after accepting a job as hitting coach of St Louis Cardinals McGuire admitted for the first time that he used steroids during his career.

I think everyone, in every sport should be allowed to take whatever they want. We're paying for entertainment. I don't see what all the outrage is about, and I can't understand why congress feels this is a priority issue.

There's a difference between lying, and refusing to answer, I'm pretty sure under this hearing you are covered by the 5th amendment, and Im sure Clemens had legal council for this.

because its none of their business whether he took steroids.
Actually , steroids are a controlled substance, and is a federal crime to possess them if they were not obtained legally, I won't pretend to know exactly what those conditions are, or wether or not he met the requirements for legal possesion, think it has something to do with having a prescription.

lying as a witness when you are summoned to testify on a subject is a crime.

Im sure the posters above would have a different opinion if, say, a military commander lied to congress about alleged war crimes, or a senator lied about embellzing money, BP Oil exec lying about what they knew about the leak when it happened, etc.

Why should athletes get to avoid any responsibility for perjury?

Yeah I would 100%

But that's the problem isn't it.

We care talking about a baseball player! Not a military commander or executive.

Come on people let's all keep our eyes on the ball, OK?

if someone is lying about a crime (a real crime) then ok perjury is important. but this was just political posturing. it was bullshit from day one. thats why I think its wrong

Maybe they can prove he was lying. That's what the trial will determine. He's not being charged with taking steroids. He's charged with perjury. Perjury is a criminal offence in Canada as well. As it should be. I would agree however that congress should have better things to do than involve itself in baseball. But lying under oath must be punished and severely. Otherwise the whole legal system collapses.
