The Teachers Pension group should be feeling the heat for 6 years of no playoffs. I think they're going to push Burke to make a big splash.
Trust me.
The OTPP could give a rat's ass about the Leafs making the playoffs.
As long as they make money, lots of money, and spend as little as possible it's all good for them.
Last place team + butts in seats + low salaries = big time happy pensioners
It always makes me laugh when Leaf fans blame Ontario`s teachers for all their problems. LOL

I am not crazy about the idea of bring in Kovalchuk, that is if he would even sign here.
I think it would be good, I would just prefer a different direction.
I do not think Burke is really considering Kovy at this point.

Not interested in Plekanec either, at least at the $ demand I expect from him.

Kovalchuck is a cutie. The Leafs need a kick ass forward like a young Brendan Shannahan.
Oh please, please, please ! You are reading my mind.
A young Shanny ? Would be just what the doctor ordered.

I agree a Shanahan-type power forward who parks in front of the goalie is what the Leafs need. But you can't pass on a proven 40 goal scorer who is under 30 years old if he is willing to sign here. It's hard enough trying to sign an Ontario born star to sign here never mind any star. Adding Kovalchuk this summer would make losing that 2nd overall pick a lot easier to swallow.

2010 Draft from LA

Leaf draft picks.

Leafs take seven on day two of draft. They traded for a second rounder with Chicago sending Jimmy Hayes to the Hawks for the pick. The Hawks took Kevin Hayes(brother) with their first round pick Friday night.

The Leafs used the second round pick to take forward Bradley Ross(6' / 175lbs) from the Portland Winterhawks(WHL).
With their own third round pick they took Erie Otter center Greg McKegg(6' / 190lbs).
Other picks were 79th Norwegian Sondre Olden(6'3" / 172lbs; playing in Sweden for Modo) and Swedes Petter Granberg(6'3" / 200) at 116 and Daniel Brodin(6'1" / 172) at 146.
Leafs took Brampton center Sam Carrick(6' / 190) at 144 and Saskatoon winger Josh Nicholls(6'2" / 175) with the 182nd and final Leaf pick.

One trade to tell you about.

Toronto dealt a fifth round pick to Anaheim for tough guy Mike Brown(6' / 210). He can take a regular shift and not hurt you and drop the gloves when needed.

The Leafs have a few players to sign and moves to make while they consider the FA market.

With just under $12.3mil. in cap space Burke should want to sign, and/or trade Kulemin and to a lesser extent J.Mitchell.
Then you have the futures of Kaberle($4.250mil / one season) and Finger($3.5mil / two seasons). One likely to be traded and the other may find himself with the Marlies.

The following players appear on the roster and must make the 2010/11 team ... one would think.
Brayden Irwin, F, $0.9
Stalberg, F, $0.85
Caputi, F, $0.83

Kadri at $1.7 could make the team.

During the season we may see ...
Rynnas, G, $2.0
Simon Gysbers, D, $0.9
Phil Paradis, F, $0.9

I would like to see, just to get an NHL look at him, Aulie, D, $0.733 ... 6'5" / 210lbs.

No the Leafs do not have a star, but there are some solid possibilities.

Leafs have really been fleeced in recent years by the Boston Bruins on the trade front.

Phil Kessel on the open market only has about 65% of the market value of Tyler Sequin. Sequin is projected as a franchise player along the lines of Steve Yzerman. On top of that Boston has a second and first rounder.
So, Burke managed to get badly fleeced there and has undone all the good things he's done with the franchise with that one blunder.

There's a good chance Toronto finishes at the bottom of the standings next season too; so Boston could get 2 franchise players in what would go down as the worst trade in the history of the NHL.

On top of that, Toronto gave away an impact goaltender for nothing more than a dirt sandwich when they let Tuka Rask get away. The 3 cores of a Boston dynasty could all be courtesy of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Well Burke was not responsible for the Rask miscue and I really think he, Burke, did not think the Leafs would finish second from the bottom, maybe not seriously thinking playoffs, but around 10th or 11th.

It will not happen anyway. Savard does not make sense for the Leafs regardless of what the media says. They are reports and not NHL GMs for a reason.

I wouldn't say it won't happen, but you're right in saying that Savard currently doesn't make sense for the Leafs. If they would indeed acquire him, Tyler Bozak would be moved to the 2nd line. Would Grabovski therefore be moved to the 3rd line? What about Mitchell? I'd say there might be a fit if Grabovski is moved.

I for one think that Bozak & Kessel are a good fit on the first line. What the Leafs need are wingers that can score. Hopefully than can re-sign Kulemin for under $3 million. Not a penny more than $2.5 million. I'm also not certain Kovalchuk would be a better fit than Savard since he'd expect to play on the first line. Where does that put Kessel? On the 2nd line? I can't see Kessel & Kovalchuk playing on the same line together, so one of them would have to agree to be moved to the 2nd unit.

The bottom line is that Marc Savard would possibly be a problematic acquistion for the Leafs, unless Boston does them a favor as well by taking on some of the Leafs excess salaries in the form of Jeff Finger and/or Mikael Grabovski. Since Grabovski is a center, i doubt Boston needs him, which is partly why they want to unload Savard. Maybe Jeff Finger would be a fit in a trade between both teams.

Leafs acquire Kris Versteeg from the Hawks

The party is definitely over.

Faced with serious salary cap issues, the Chicago Blackhawks traded away another contributor to the Stanley Cup title team, shipping Kris Versteeg to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday.

The Leafs also received forward Bill Sweatt, a second-round pick in 2007 who played four seasons at Colorado College, for forwards Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico and Philippe Paradis.

Versteeg, 24, had 20 goals and 24 assists in 79 regular-season games for Chicago. He had six goals and eight assists in the playoffs.

Versteeg completed his third season in the league, all with Chicago.

He signed a three-year, $9.25 million contract with the Hawks last summer. Cap concerns already forced Chicago to unload playoff hero Dustin Byfuglien in a deal with Atlanta this offseason.

Stars Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith have new long-term deals to go with the huge contract Marian Hossa signed before last season.

Cup winning goalie Antti Niemi needs a new contract and will likely receive a hefty raise.

The 24-year-old Stalberg, from Sweden, had nine goals and five assists in 40 games for Toronto last season, his first in the NHL.

The 19-year-old Paradis was selected by Carolina in the first round of the 2009 draft, then traded to Toronto in December. He had 24 goals in 63 games last season for Shawinigan in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The 21-year-old DiDomenico had seven goals in 12 regular-season games for Drummondville in the QMJHL. He also had seven goals in 14 playoff games.

Even though i liked Stalberg, he didn't score as much as i had hoped & was somewhat injury-prone. Paradis likely wouldn't have made the NHL, and who knows about DiDomenico. Versteeg is a Stanley Cup winner, can put the puck in the net, has more experience, is the same age as Stalberg, and he's the better player. I don't know anything about Sweatt, who probably is just as good as the other players Toronto gave Chicago.

Decision: Toronto.

Well done, Burkie!

Mitchell re-signs for $0.725 for one season.

On another note.
Leafs also get nailed with a bonus penalty of $1.4mil and current bonuses of $5.385mil, bringing the cap space down to $2.575.
Finger almost has to be sent down now.

Bonuses? I thought they only apply to above-expectation performances. Being the 29th team in a 30 team league and missed the playoff by a mile, the Leafs have to pay boneuses?? What is going on here!

Lol Hockey. A rink the size of a back garden and the goalie the same size as the net lol. No wonder the sport has no skill and the best tactic is to dump the puck down the ice and a big Saskatchewan farm boy to plow people into the boards. Most of the goals are scrappy rebounds and take no skill.

zzzzz boring....
