Young Perry also got that dumb penalty that led to a 2 goal U.S. lead. Please tell me he is not a Saskatchewan boy.
Perry played junior for the Hunter's in London so he is from Ontario.

Has anybody seen Joe Thornton? Anyone?

Thanks, I knew no Sakatchewan boy could be that dumb. Gordie Howe came from Saskatchewan you know. He scored goals against goalies like Glenn Hall, Jacque Plante, Johnny Bower, etc.

U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A!!!

As empty net goals go, Kesler's was a beauty.... a backhanded stab when he was beaten for the touch to seal the victory.

While I do genuinely feel badly for the Canadians because it would have been a great story for them to win Hockey Gold on their own soil, the Americans played a great game and just plain beat them. No cheat win here, although the Conspiracy Theorists and American Haters will certtainly find a way to spin this otherwise.
Listening to the game they put forth an interesting tidbit: There's only 1 hockey team to ever win Olympic gold on it's home ice and they've done it twice .... USA.

O

OnTheWayOut

Well, from that game? No wonder we don't have a sense of patriotism.....
Wow, your hockey team keeps you from being patriotic?

How ummm errr ..... interesting ...... and revealing. And astounding.

OnTheWayOut

Ok, here is some free advice from Coach Rockslinger. The Canadians must put pressure on the American's defense. Two men in forechecking and one man in the middle. The American defense is weak and will crack under constant pressure. P.S. I have no clue what I just said. Insert smilie here.
You nailed that coach! The PS part that is :)

Meh, our 2002 team was much better than the current squad we have. Remember this?

Mario Lemieux-C
Paul Kariya

Jarome Iginla
Simon Gagné

Owen Nolan
Joe Nieuwendyk
Scott Niedermayer

Theo Fleury
Martin Brodeur
(In his prime)
Rob Blake
Steve Yzerman-A
Ryan Smyth
Brendan Shanahan
Joe Sakic-A
Al MacInnis
Eric Lindros

Ed Jovanovski
Curtis Joseph
Ed Belfour
Eric Brewer
Adam Foote
Chris Pronger
Adam Foote

Now that was a bad ass fucking team. Our current team has to rely on Crosby and Iginla too much.

2002 - does anyone remember the winning goal.

Lemieux and Kariya had instant chemistry at SLC, they carried the team. In the gold medal game, Blake pinched in on a loose puck and passed to Lemieux, who had drawn his checker plus the goalie to to him, he unselfishly let the puck go through his legs to an open Kariya who scored.

SEE YA!!!!!!

Games on 2/23
CZE v. LAT / CAN v. GER / SLV v. NOR / SWI v. BEL

Games on 2/24 (Quarters)
USA v. SWI/BEL / SWE v. SLV/NOR / RUS v. CAN/GER / FIN v. CZE/LAT

Games on 2/26 (Semis)
(USA v. SWI/BEL) v. (FIN v. CZE/LAT) / (SWE v. SLV/ NOR) v. (RUS v. CAN/GER)

What this means is that Canada plays Germany then that winner plays Russia and then that winner plays Sweden.
So for Canada to win the gold medal they will have to win Tuesday v. Germany then Wed v. Russia and Fri v. Swe for a rematch on Sun v. USA
Piece of cake, eh !!!

I will be pissed if Brodeur plays again in this tournament.
That would be a terrible coaching decision.
It wouldn't surprise me though since the coach seems to think that Pronger and Perry should play in key situations.
With coaching like this, we don't have much of a chance to win a medal.

In a short tournament like this and with 3 goalies who deserve to play, the starter should be yanked at the first sign of looking bad or if he loses and Brodeur did both.

I would start Luongo with Fleury backing up and I would be quick to pull Luongo at the first sign of him playing bad just like Brodeur should have been pulled after the brutal 2nd US goal.
Batting the puck recklessly was not good but the lame attempt to stop that shot was absolutely pathetic.

Stamkos, Lecavalier, and St. Louis should be on the team instead of Morrow, Perry, and Bergeron.
Greene and Phaneuf should have made the team instead of Pronger and perhaps Niedermayer too.
Pronger is brutal and should be benched as the 7th defence man.

Corey Perry - born Peterborough, ON - May 16, 1985.

So by GlavaMan's reasoning he should have played junior hockey for the Petes and not the London Knights.

And yeah, I've seen Joe Thornton or least someone skating around wearing a Team Canada jersey with 19 - Thornton on the back.
Doing sweet F.A.

Along with Perry, Getzlaf, Morrow, Pronger, Niedermayer, Nash, Brodeur & Iginla.

These guys should be embarrassed by their lack of effort & interest.
Unfortunately, they won't be because they can't wait until the Olympics are over so they get back to what they really care about.
Being the big fishes in their little ponds of Calgary, Columbus, New Jersey & SoCal.

Toews, Marleau, Heatley, Doughty (and occasionally Crosby) are the only ones giving the effort needed to reach the level of success that the above mentioned talk about achieving.

Actually, losing to Team USA may be a blessing in disguise for Team Canada. Now they really know they have to play as a determined team to win it all. Best of luck to both teams. :)

Players born in Ontario are subject to the OHL draft, therefore may end up playing in any of the OHL centres depending on his ranking at draft time and order of teams in draft.
That is how Perry ended up in London.

Thornton has a history of disappearing come playoffs. Looks like history is repeating itself yet again.

I never thought Cory Perry should have even been consider after the first cut down.

From a fan point of view I love Getzlaf. I would dearly love to see him in Blue and White, but he was injured and should have been dropped.

Pronger's best days are gone. I would have had Bouwmeester or Phaneuf before Pronger.

Niedermayer seems to be disinterested.

Nash is a big and talented forward, but he is slow vs teams of stars. At least he seems slow on the ice to me.

During the first part of the season I questioned whether Brodeur should be considered for the starter. Then he caught fire and everyone kind of let it go. He cooled off as the Olympics approached, but I thought he would pick it up. Because Canada lost and the fact that the 'Own the Podium' program has, so far, fallen on it's face, the mistake made by Brodeur leading to the second US goal stands out.
That said I would start Loungo against the Germans. If we win, he goes back in against Russia, if we lose that kind of solves the dilemma.

Canadian NHL players are not like Euros. With us the club team comes first, because the Stanley Cup means more then any other championship.
An Olympic Gold is fine, but make no mistake I would rather see the Leafs win the Cup then Canada win Gold.

Crosby needs to get more ice time.

I do not care for the way Babcok is handling this team. He was never my first choice.

I know I disagree with you on a lot of things but I am SO with you on this, I can't believe they're not on there......specially LaCav and St Lou.....

I still can't believe Pronger's on this fricken team. Sure he has experience but he looks like a lumbering elephant out there.

I think we have what, 4 or 5 speedsters out there?

And Getzlaf, noticed him last year or the year before, he's good but he has to step up his play. Hell, they ALL do. They aren't going anywhere the way they are. Seriously. You can't win against teams of this calibre unless you go balls to the walls every shift.

AND DON'T TAKE FRICKEN STUPID PENALTIES....with brodeur's antics and the stupid penalties, they cost us that game.

If brodeur is in the next game? That's it. Won't be watching any more....well, I might, but I'll root for the opposing team.

I agree, after that baseball swat and before that, the way the americans were reading his shots along the boards, if I was the coach I would have said: settle the fuck down, stay in the net, or get the fuck off the ice. This is BIGGER than the stanley cup playoffs and you're out there like a rookie.....

Right near the last minute of the game, Crosby had just completed a 1 and a half minute shift and was totally winded when the Canadians were called for offside. Why didn't Bacock call a timeout? Crosby was exhausted and Babcock didn't call a timeout.

Babock is horrible...His talented players on Detroit made him look like a genius!
As for the Brodeur & Luongo situation, i would've let Luongo stay as the starter just becuase he got the shutout.

I hate to say this, but Canada is looking real bad and the chances of us getting any medal is up in air.
Half of our team is too old and slow to keep up with these youngsters.
Pronger & Neidermayer is our first line of Defense?? I mean come on, these 2 guys a well past their prime.
No disrespect to my boy Stevie Y, but i would've prefered the great one to select the team.
Gretzky at least would of chose the right team to compete at this high level, but unfortunately for Stevie Y, his friendship with those veterans from the Salt Lake Team was not worth leaving out...

Babcock not ready to announce Luongo as starter

According to a report from Yahoo! Sports, Roberto Luongo will get the start in net for Canada against Germany in Tuesday's qualification round game, replacing Martin Brodeur.

However in an interview with Vancouver radio station THE TEAM 1040, Canada's head coach Mike Babcock was not yet ready to make that announcement.

"Well, it sounds to me like TSN is ahead of the coaching staff so if they got a good scoop, you'll be able to say 'they knew'".

Luongo started Canada's opening game against Norway, making 15 in an 8-0 shutout where he was never really tested.

Brodeur was in net for Canada's past two games, making 21 saves in regulation then four more in a shootout in a win over Switzerland but was not at his best in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the United States.

After the loss, coach Mike Babcock admitted Canada could have certainly been better in the goaltending area versus the U.S. and didn't discount the idea of starting Luongo next, however he appeared to soften his stance on Monday when speaking to the TEAM.

"All athletes, especially proud ones that have been successful many times want to be good every single night, and sometimes it doesn't go the way you want it," Babcock said of Brodeur. "And when you look at it, I guarantee you his preparation was fantastic and he was ready to be the best he could be. It didn't happen for him, but there's nothing we can do about yesterday and it's time to move on."

Babcock also admitted that with the loss Canada would have a hard path to the medal rounds, but that they expected to face some adversity at some point in the tournament.

"I've been involved in a number of these - whether it be in the World Juniors or the World Championships - and we've always chosen the hard way. I don't know why that is, but we've always chosen the hard way. It seems to be the Canadian way. It was no different in 2002 when they won the Gold medal. We've just got to get ready for Germany and get better each and every day."

Canada must get better in a hurry as a dual with Russia is looming in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Thank goodness it's official.
Brodeur is done. :D

Now if only they would make Pronger the 7th defence man and keep him on the bench.

Luongo will start for Canada

VANCOUVER — It is his dressing room, his rink and now, his net.

Roberto Luongo will get the start for Canada Tuesday in their sudden-death elimination game against Germany and from here on, signalling what might well be the passing of the Olympic goaltending torch.

Canadian coach Mike Babock made the decision go with Luongo over 37-year-old Martin Brodeur, who had an uneven performance in a 5-3 loss to the USA Sunday in what is likely his last Olympic Games.

“We’re in the winning business,” said Babcock. “To win at any level, you need big saves, momentum-changing saves. We’re looking for Lou to do that for us.”

Babcock said the Team Canada braintrust had come into the tournament open to the idea of making a goaltending switch. You know it’s a decision they wished they hadn’t had to make, but there is no room now for loyalty, for second chances, no time.

“We felt we needed a change and now we’re making it,” he said.

So now Luongo gets to play in his home rink in front of the fans who cheer for him as a Vancouver Canuck and will cheer even more loudly as a member of Team Canada.

“My excitement level is really high right now,” said Luongo. “Possibly the highest it’s ever been.

“I’ve got a lot of experience at the international level. I know what to expect. I know it won’t be easy. The Germans are a good team and they could surprise us. I’m going to put my best game on the ice and, as a team, we’re going to execute.”

The Canadians looked at the goaltending performance of USA’s Ryan Miller Sunday, his butterfly covering much of the net and stopping shots through traffic. Luongo is a big body with a similar style and, like Babcock said, “things hit you.”

Babcock said he didn’t think Brodeur “was shocked,” upon hearing of the change.

“He’s a pro, he’s been through it. He’s won championships. He understands it’s about the team and not the individual and that’s the case now,” said the coach.

Babcock shuffled wingers with centre Sidney Crosby again, putting Eric Staal on the left and Jarome Iginla on the right.

Team Canada executive director Steve Yzerman said his team is not feeling overwhelmed or shocked to be in this position.

“You just can’t go out expecting to go undefeated and win the gold medal in every tournament,” he said. “The country has to understand you’re going to face adversity. We’re not sitting here in total shock saying, ‘how could we be in this situation?’

“The only thing that’s happened is the puck hasn’t gone in the net the last two games. These are good people who want to do well and they want to make Canada proud. They’re trying hard.”
