I first took notice of him on the tag or tog being sold thread. I thought his arguement style screamed ayn rand, yet he didn't name himself after that other character the randoids usually use. A google search sure enough showed that Hank is also an ayn rand character. That explains everything.

I like Rand and often ask, where is John Galt.

Virtue of Selfishness. great read.:)

I am an Objectivist, and a very selfish person. However I can be altruistic for a selfish reason. It makes me feel good. Though I love Ayn Rand and what she stood for, she was far too crusty.

Everyone is self-motivated - I've got no issue with that. The problem with Hankeypoo is that he was/is a jerk and a coward, and not a very smart one at that.

I never considered, however, that he was yanking our chains with an act...

The problem is the Ayn Randers almost always forget that sometimes being altruistic can be extremely beneficial, the Helpers High for example.
In Rand's work she uses the word "altruism" is a particular manner. I forget the exact definition, but it is something like "sacrificing a greater value for a lesser". Similarly she has her own particular definition of "selfishness", which if memory serves is closer to the concept of "self-esteem" or "self-worth" rather than "to-hell-with-everybody-else".

I've never studied her work in detail, I just read the well known novels. I got the impression that she chose her terms for shock value. As most people tend to consider selfishness as a vice, she redefined selfishness and used the term to describe a virtue.

The problem then arises when self-proclaimed objectivists adopt the "I'm looking out for #1 and to hell with the world" attitude without internalising the objectivist virtues of honesty, fair dealing, etc.

And of course, irrespective of the value of her work, Ayn Rand, like many intellectuals, was a complete nut.

Actually it is amazing how many intellectuals as well as artists are either complete nutters
I find that people that are intellectuals, or well to the right of the Bell curve tend to look at the world differently then most "average" people do. That does not make them nuts, it just means that what they perceive as important is not the same as what Joe Sixpack looks at as important.

Nice Dens
Having read most of Ryand's works I decided to bed her. Ann Ryand was much to conservative in bed for my liking. She could not even make my Atlas Shrug. Her Fountain Head was dry especially after years of dating John Galt. However as always YMMV.

2) No performance complaints.
