Our hank reardon doesn't seem to have a lot in common with rands.

I am an Objectivist, and a very selfish person. However I can be altruistic for a selfish reason. It makes me feel good. Though I love Ayn Rand and what she stood for, she was far too crusty.
In Rand's work she uses the word "altruism" is a particular manner. I forget the exact definition, but it is something like "sacrificing a greater value for a lesser". Similarly she has her own particular definition of "selfishness", which if memory serves is closer to the concept of "self-esteem" or "self-worth" rather than "to-hell-with-everybody-else".Andy Stitzer said:

I find that people that are intellectuals, or well to the right of the Bell curve tend to look at the world differently then most "average" people do. That does not make them nuts, it just means that what they perceive as important is not the same as what Joe Sixpack looks at as important.Andy Stitzer said:
