Infrared Security Camera hooked up to my computer

I've brought an infrared security camera out of the closet after 4 years and I hooked it up to my computer which had the computer card and software installed 4 years ago, and they're still installed. The system used to work.

Now, the software (MicroJack) shows the video from the camera as pure white. Everything's white. When I took the camera and cables and power adapter to the "spy" store, they tested each part and found that they work.

What is wrong? Why don't I see what the camera sees?

Another thing. If I use the software to display what the camera sees, it'll show pure white, but then, if I select Start -> Programs, a menu will appear beside the word "Programs" and as that menu is loading, the software will display what the camera sees for that brief second when that menu is loading. If I do it again, it doesn't happen because now the menu loads much quicker. So, like, what's going on? How do I fix this?

A white screened window sounds like an overlay issue.
Try downloading and installing the latest video drivers for your video card\chipset.
Make sure you remove the existing ones with "Add\Remove Programs" before installing the new one.
If you still have issues, see if you can download a newer version of MicroJack.

Since you see a quick glimpse of the picture, sounds like the camera is working, and the drivers are probably working.

I assume you're running Windows XP? Have you tried other software which can use your video capture card, such as perhaps Windows Movie Maker (although I don't recall how), or Helix video streaming software? Have you tried connecting another source (e.g. a VCR) to check if it's something with the camera, or with the computer?

I've got a problem with a security camera on my machine that the picture loses horizontal stability. A VCR, though, works just fine. And the camera works fine if I'm recording it on a VCR, or on a different video capture card. So until you can isolate the problem a little more (and find various combinations of sources and software that does work, we're probably all guessing in the dark (or the white).

Posted this in the technology forum also:

Try this, at least it won't hurt. Go to Start, control panel, display, settings, advanced, troubleshooting and turn down the acceleration one notch.

The suggestion in the other thread about dowloading an updated video driver is a good one.

I always recommend that if you decide to use a PC for security cams it should be a dedicated one. Start with a fresh OS install then add the video capture board(s) and software. Set the software up and walk away from the unit. By using a dedicated PC you can reduce the risk of problems every time you add or change a program. There is a reason that a 16 port multiplexer with DVR runs 2 grand and up.
