Just arrived back from Santiago de Cuba, and thought I would write a bit of a trip report for some of the people interested in traveling to Cuba. I have added some “_,0” into some of the town names so they will not show up in the search engines.
I stayed at Clu_b Bucaner0 in October, and again in December just arriving back yesterday. The resort is located about 30 minutes from Santiago, 15 pesos by taxi, or you can also rent a scooter or car. $100 Canadian = 85 Pesos. The resort is a simple, more comparable to a large motel. The rooms are simple, but clean, and include a safe, fridge, TV, window AC, terrace or balcony. All rooms have an ocean view. The buffet offers a small selection of food that is filling at best. The friendly staff and location are what makes this hotel appealing. You would not go to this resort to be pampered, or for the beach and food.
The location is very good if you like site seeing. The main road to the east winds through lush mountainous countryside to the ocean, and then follows the coastline. To the west is Santiago, which is very interesting to explore. Off the road to Santiago is a road that winds up through the mountains to the top, where there is a small hotel. Another road goes to a nice beach, which is popular with the locals.
For those looking for a more modern upscale location as a base, Mel_ia Santiag0 is a modern hotel located in the city. This hotel has a chrome and marble look, with generally good food.
Santiago is a very old city with many old buildings, clubs with live bands, some old hotels and restaurants. Although the better food is at the private homes. The people are friendly and helpful, and you can travel around the city day or night and feel safe.
My trip was to travel and to visit friends. I rented a scooter for the week and toured the countryside, and then in the evening went to the private homes for dinner, and to night clubs to watch the live shows. It is a beautiful area, and it feels safe to drive the scooter as there is next to no traffic, except in the city. But for those looking to hobby, this location is VERY good.
When you leave the resort, within 200m, often girls will come out of the bushes and wave you down, offering to spend some time with you. There are homes, which are primitive by our standards, in the area you can rent for 5 pesos, the girl will be 10 – 20 pesos depending on what you are looking for, and how generous you are feeling. A short distance further, there is a beach, with more girls waving at you. Then through a small village, with more girls, and guys selling cigars and crafts. Then out to the highway, about 2Km.
Up the main road towards Santiag0 there is a nice beach which is popular with locals in the town of Sib0n_ey, about 7 Km from the resort. This town is a hive of activity, with guys hooking up tourists with girls and homes. So many available girls. You can also sit at one of the beer tents close to the beach and relax, or chat with the girls/Cubans. The cost is about 10 pesos for the room, and 20 for the girl. A can of beer is 1 peso.
Into Santiag0. There are some girls in the main square, but the police presence keeps most of the activity just off the main square, and in the nightclubs. Again, so many girls.
The girls will generally not quote a price, but if you are just looking for some quick fun, it is better to ask for the price in advance so there will be no surprises. The girls are mostly looking to hook up with foreigners who will spend time with them, hoping for some money, and that you will fall in love and want to marry her and take her out of the country.
The girls in this area of Cuba are mostly mulatto, and mostly in their 20s. Like anywhere else, some of the girls are very pretty, some not so, much depends on what you are looking for. There are some underage girls working, so it is important to check the girls Id if she looks younger. If she does not have Id then move on, as the last place you want to find yourself is in a Cuban jail. All Cubans are required to carry Id. Don’t trust her or any of her friends on this issue.
