I got 2 emails, addressed to mail@ ( my url) today. One purportedly from the FBI and the other from apparently the CIA. Both said identical messages... that I had been to over 30 illegal web sites and that I was to fill out the questionaire that was attached ( in a zipped file). Even after deleting both I had to run the Microsoft anti-virus adAware, Spybot, counterstike, Solo, and Norton. Collectively they found @ 10 viruses and a bunch of worms.
First, I haven't been to any "illegal" websites, second, I didn't open the zipped files, and third, has this been going on long? I haven't had any problems with worms and viri in months until these emails showed up in my Outlook. Thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

I saw this start pouring in about 3 days ago. One of the Spam Filters i set up for a client, which usually filters about 1500 of 2800 e-mails daily jumped to 2600 of 4500 being filtered. A lot from the new Sober and another mailer.

!!! trying to steal your identity!!!

 I am sure many of you know but for the sake of those who don't..this is a fishing attempt to get personal info on you to steal your identity; then steal money out of your bank account or get loans in you name. Many will send emails with official bank logos; claiming to be your bank in need of updating your personal info. Dont even call any phone #s in the email. Call the branch were you have the account and speak to a account manager. These scams have presented themselves as representatives of e-bay; yahoo and others.

I think this might be a little different. This is just nasty. Just hit delete on the phsh emails and nothing goes wrong.

But I get your point. I get the phishing emails from banks I don't even do business with. Wells Fargo for one.

Sure they do, and the solution is very easy.

Use the Mac OS.
OK that was typical and untrue.

Oh wait! A security update from a company not called Microsoft? Couldn't be. But guess what Apple have released:

Or even a whole website dedicated to security on the Mac.

Look, yes viruses are more prevelant on the windows side vs. the apple side. But for you to time and time again suggest that Apple has none is wishful thinking. Again the old argument that hackers and virus writers will write malicious code for a better bang for the buck is so true. In the same way that I have 1000s more programs available for Windows than I can get for a Mac.

Get a market share of more than 1.8% (2004 figures) and you'll be faced with the same problems that Windows users do.

Be a little less predictable and more honest next time.

in defense of Winston, and certainly I'm no expert, but I only get hit on my PC. I regularly visit the same sites on my iBook and iMac that I do on my PC. I have antivirus applications on all 3 machines. Only the PC catches viri and worms, I've not had any problem with the Apple products yet.

The FBI and CIA don't need to send you e-mails. They already have hidden cameras in your home and microchips in your brain! :p
