Is this the invasion that AM is talking about?

Android App Steals and Sends User Data to China
July 29th, 2010 at 11:12 AM - News by Jeff Gamet

A popular third-party wallpaper app for Android-based smartphones apparently collects user’s personal data and uploads it to servers in China without permission. The news was revealed by the mobile security company Lookout at the Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas, according to VentureBeat.

The wallpaper app comes from Jackeey Wallpaper and has been downloaded somewhere between 1.1 million and 4.6 million times. It collects user’s voicemail password, SIM card number and subscriber ID, and sends the information off to imnet.us in Shenzhen China.

Third-party apps don’t go through any screening process before appearing on the Android Market, which is Google’s version of Apple’s iPhone App Store. In contrast, apps must go through Apple’s screening and approval process before being distributed through the App Store.

Google monitors the apps that appear on its Android Market store, although in a more reactive mode when compared to Apple’s App Store approval process.

The issue with Jackeey Wallpaper’s Android app will no doubt serve as an example for Apple policy supporters showing why the company’s strict review policies are necessary.

Google has not yet responded to TMO’s request for a comment.

It's funny to watch AM spin it like Bill O'Reilly.
Come on!
Nobody spins better than Billy, Hannity and the other fools on FAUX....

it`s funnier watching Apple and the fanbois squirm with every bad news clipping about Apple.
djk seems to think that an app approved by Apple in the Apple app store that permits hackers to access your bank account number, payment transactions and security information is not a big deal. i guess it`s a good thing Citi Bank is such a small financial institution LOL Just because a Citi Bank contractor wrote some bad code in the app is no excuse!! who knows, maybe it was intentional.
Bottom line is it WAS available in the app store!

what we really need is a small firewall to run on our iphones/ipods. this'll either stop call homes or give us the option. at least you would know what the apps are doing.

speaking of knowing what apps are doing, how about Apple knowing everywhere your phone goes, and being able to share that information with 3rd party app makers and advertisers.
In Apples user agreement, that is the case. you can opt out of Apple sharing with 3rd party , but Apple retain the right to track your phone and collect information.

"To provide location-based services on Apple products, Apple and our partners and licensees may collect, use, and share precise location data, including the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device. This location data is collected anonymously in a form that does not personally identify you and is used by Apple and our partners and licensees to provide and improve location-based products and services. For example, we may share geographic location with application providers when you opt in to their location services.

Some location-based services offered by Apple, such as the MobileMe “Find My iPhone” feature, require your personal information for the feature to work
."
full agreement here: http://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

Customers have the "option" to opt in, but Apple is reportedly punishing those who decline to accept the checkbox sort of privacy agreement. According to the LA Times, "Until they agree, they cannot download anything through the [iTunes] store."

That means no apps, music, or iBooks (from Apple) for those who opt out.

The company says there's no harm in letting it follow your every move. It says it will largely use the information for internal purpose such as MobileMe, the "Find My iPhone" app, and targeted advertising. It will also share the info with third-party app-makers who are looking to create location aware apps like social networking services or tweets.

Customers do have the option to prevent third-party apps from collecting location data, which can be found under the "Location Services" page under Settings-->General on the iPad/iPhone. Still, this does not prevent Apple from collecting and using information internally for its own purposes, including advertising. Given Apple's language it is likely that the company does intend to collect and use this data, even when users disallow apps to access it.

Apple has not revealed how often it will poll its various devices for locations or how long it will store its logs of customers' movements.
