As a fuji, what do you think the majority of Japanese prefer to be call, oriental or asian?
So these collective names, including "East Asians", are not confusing? They are just not well defined categories.
I guess you won't call Rob Ford an blithering idiot for saying "The East Asian people, excluding Mongolians and Russians, plus Vietnamese people, work like dogs and they are slowly taking over"?
No different than "Eastern European" or "West African", all such categories have fuzzy edges.
The problem with the word "oriental" is that it is eurocentric, describing Asians from the perspective of Europe rather than from an Asian perspective. China is not in the "oriental" direction if you are standing on Nanjing Lu, Europe is!
Now I don't believe that was ever meant to be racist, nor do I believe Ford meant to be racist. But it is an outdated term that belongs back in the 1700's, back in the days before we English speakers included so many Asians.
So you prefer Rob Ford saying "Asians work like dogs and they are slowly taking over?"
I don't have any problem with "Asian". It means people originally from Asia, seems like a neutral, descriptive word. The problem with "oriental" is it means "people who live over in the direction of Mecca", which only makes sense if you think Europe is the center of the world.

Again, I am sure he didn't intend to be insulting, but it invokes a stereotype, and just does not come off well. Why is it that asian people are thought of as working "like dogs", as opposed to using their brains and working intelligently? And why are they "taking over" as opposed to just integrating into Canada and being Canadians like everybody else?
I think it's possible to take that too far, I don't think he meant to be racist at all -- but I certainly think he sounds ignorant.

I thought you were not lumping everyone in an homogenous culture? Why the need to define this group in a single word other than the widely accepted geographical name Asian?
Do you think if Ford had said Asian his statement would have created confusion and had Vietnamese, Filipinos, and Chinese people demanding clarification?

This thread is not about me, but about Rob Ford's crack problems.
You are right, I have too much to loose to tell my boss he is a crack head. This close confidant of Ford has now lost the percs of privilge. We can't know for sure her motive, but she could have kept her head down like so many other former supporters and tied to ride it out. Something she has seen from the inside must have lead here to this decission.
All adds up to one more piece of eveidence that Rob Ford is indeed a user of Crack Cocaine!
No. Property taxes increase when Council votes to increase the rate; in the tax-hike Rob is backing—although he campaigned on holding rates constant and giving back both Miller taxes, he hasn't found enough gravy to do either—that's a raise of 1.5%. What you're referring to is an increase in the property-tax revenue because assessments/property values have risen. You will indeed pay more HST on a Rolex than on a Timex, but the rate's the same, and no one promised it wouldn't change, then raised it.
For making a promise he couldn't possibly keep, we can blame Ford. For buying such a false and stupid promise, and still not seeing he's incompetent to manage anything like it, we can only blame the Ford Nation.
Just like his subways that will be financed by the private sector, another ridiculous promise that stands no chance of becoming reality.
Those are typical errors of politicians, being overly positive and then facing reality while in power.

The star is reporting that Ford's other campaign manager, Richard Ciano, also says he won't return to work for Ford in 2014 unless Ford gets treatment.
