Tomorrow starting at 10:30 AM, 30,000 ardent and motivated sports fans will congregate at 1310 Surf Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, at the original Nathan's Famous, for the most important sporting event of the year. ESPN and many other sports outlets will broadcast the proceedings. It is the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, the biggest event on the IFOCE (International Federation of Competitive Eating) calendar.
For the men, the great Joey Chestnut, all 6'1", 230 lbs of him, will be defending his title after an easy win last year. Vegas has him -1500 to win. This is his fifteenth year of competition and going for his 12th title. He currently holds 49 world records including his recent breaking of Sonya Thomas' long running record of 66 hard boiled eggs, by eating 141 hard boiled eggs in 8 minutes. He's no dummy, with an engineering degree. He learned to eat fast because he was one of six children.
The lone Canadian entrant is 5'9", 160 lbs, Darrien Thomas. This 20 year old ate 19 1/4 hot dogs in 10 minutes. He is ranked #27 in the IFOCE rankings. His chance of winning this contest is nil. His chance of finishing last is very possible.
On the distaff side is attractive Miko Sudo from the West Coast. This 5'7" 33 year-old is rated #6 in the world and will no doubt win the women's portion of the competition. Her personal best in this contest is 41 hot dogs in 10 minutes. She holds a number of world records such as consuming 16 1/2 pints of ice cream in 6 minutes, 71 Twinkies in 6 minutes and 61 1/2 bratwurst sausages in 10 minutes.
Let's hope for sunny warm weather to create the best ambiance for this historic event.
