Costs of importing from China?

I bought some steel drill bits from China to check the quality with the possibility of selling them here. It looks like there is a 25% tariff added to steel products. I am having them sent UPS so it should come right to my door. I assume customs will have a look at them and determine the cost and hold them or they may sneak through without question?

Has anyone ever done it? UPS was about 210USD on a 500$ order, can go by sea shipping for cheaper if I happen to buy more weight next time, but I guess they will only land at the nearest port and I will have to take it from there. Looks like Canada only has a 20$ and under value for duty free, is that right?

Anyone know the ins and out of importing?

If the quality is good then yes. I bought some before for myself and the quality was very good. Now I have to hand out some free samples to get some feedback.

Why would there be a 25% tariff?

Careful with UPS. I’ve had several experiences where they have charged ridiculous border handling fees. I’ve also had instances where I have received the package and paid duty at the door, then received an additional bill for border handling fees later.

I just read about these border handling fees. I will have to make a few calls tomorrow. How did you avoid the fees after?

I thought that the 25% tariff is between USA and China, USA and EU.

How can 25% tariff be popped up between Canada and China's steels?

Also, almost 9 years ago, I bought a headphone from the Costco.com (USA) instead of Costco.ca (Canada) because it was about $50 cheaper in the Costco.com than in Costco.ca for a similar headphone. At that time, the CAD and USD was almost at par so the exchange rate was not a much issue. Upon the delivery perhaps from the UPS, I was slapped for another $30 for a duty fee which I had to pay to the UPS guy. So this is quite normal that we need to pay for a duty fee to the Canadian government when buying stuffs from abroad and delivered by a courier.

I'm still using this headphone even now and it's still producing very good sound and experience. LOL

I'll have to phone ups and customs Canada tomorrow, but on their site I'm sure I saw a 25% steel tariff. Will have to clarify if there is a difference between steel and products made of steel.

Too bad for the postal strike, they would have brought your product into Canada at 20% less than UPS.

Why are you buying cutting tools from the PRC? According to my Chinese gumbas, anything manufactured in China is junk. Obviously you're not running a machine shop, you would have known to buy your drill bits from Germany or the Czech Republic.

They all charge fees but my personal experience is that UPS are the highest and they have the sleaziest practices. Eg: FedEx charges fees but it is all up front on the bill when you sign at the door or included in the shipping fee. What bugs me about UPS is that you can sign at the door to pay duty and any HST and then randomly receive an additional invoice, sometime a week later for “border handling fees” - above and beyond the shipping fees you paid when you ordered. You have no recourse except to pay and the amount of handling fees seems almost random. I once refused to pay because the “border handling fee” was as much as the shipping fee I had already paid. It wasn’t a lot of money but out of principle I complained up the ladder, was told they would waive or send me an adjusted invoice - so I didn’t pay and never heard back. Then a couple months later I got called by a third party to collect the original fee. UPS sold this small invoice to a collections agency while I was disputing it! I’ve concluded that UPS will sometimes use independent brokers depending upon the point of entry and then forward the bill later. So you don’t know your true shipping costs until after the fact.

So whenever possible, I avoid UPS. YMMV.
