I drive a top of the line Acura 2016, I was at the dealership and as usual it needs this and that...

Tire rotation was one of them + balancing $99.00. The total bill was going to be over 500, for the service.

told them had an important business meeting and made sure car be ready in two hours. Long story short car still sitting there after 2 hours, without being worked on.

Got pist talked to the guy and gives me additude..... say fuck it and took it to a quick oil shop.

ask the kid working if they do tire rotation, he said they do, quotes same price as acura.

This is where I learn some thing new.

I tell him ok do it.

he replies, are you sure it needs it?

I asked what do you mean?

he tells me, let me measure the threads. checks all wheels and tells me they are wearing evenly. therefore there is no need to rotate them, because there is not even half a milimiter difference.

Check with two tire shops specifically, because im like St Thomas, get same answer.

I'm fucking done with Acura.

It's not Acura. It's all of them. Firstly, you don't need to rotate them unless you drive on the oval. Secondly, if the dealership insists, tell them to do it for free and they'll stop insisting. Finally, when buying a top of the line model it's a good idea to have them throw in free service for the duration of warranty. I haven't bought a personal car in a very long time(company vehicle) but, not long ago, I visited a couple of dealerships- Lexus and Nissan- and both of them offered that as a part of a deal.

I have some bad news for you.

There is no such thing as free anything. You pay for it one way or the other.

As to the OP.......

Tire rotation is a scam. If you have snow tires, and I do, putting the snows on or switching back to summers is the perfect time to "rotate tires" . As long as the tires were marked as to their orientation when they came off the car, when they go back on, they should be rotated.

There's also no reason you can't rotate your own tires. You can buy a decent floor Jack at your local Costco and save yourself a pile of money.

Lastly, do NOT follow any "preferred maintenance" plan your dealer has posted on the wall in the service centre. Follow the service manual that came with the car (religiously). You will find the factory correct services and periods in the manual. Most cars need just oil changes till about 100,000 km, yet dealers will try to sell you all kinds of crap (like Tire rotation or my personal favourite "servicing the brakes" )

FYI, an even bigger scam than Tire rotation is "serving the brakes" . If the pads aren't worn out, or the rotors too thin, there's no reason to touch the brakes. Everybody loves brake jobs

LOL. This makes me laugh because some people like me are a little anal when it comes to brake noises. I can't stand noise from the brakes. Cleaning up the calipers and re-greasing the pads to get the gunk out can really help with noise and pedal feel. If I'm changing the tires and feeling up to it I might go ahead and do this. Gives me a good chance to see how the pads on the back of the rotors are too.

Have your wives wear a secret cam and watch what shit they try to scam us with.

Trust me when I say I LOVE being a women who knows just a little bit about cars. Sticking it to mechanics who think they can get the drop on me and mind is often a highlight of mine

Had a guy at CT once try to sell me nitrous for my tires. SELL me. The shit is free but he tried to tell me on regular air in the tire is free. Yes - they tried that shit and only because I am suppose to be a dumb chick who doesn't know better.

^Nitrogen right? Nitrous is the stuff where you press a steering wheel button and snap your head back to pretend you're in a Fast & Furious movie.

And that's just the shop trying to recoup its investment in the nitrogen filling equipment. Of course it's a waste of money for cars to bring the fill from 79% nitrogen (i.e. normal air) to ~95% nitrogen...

Honestly OP if you’re as stupid as you make it seem in your original post then you deserve to be fleeced every time you take your car in

Like why is a 16 year old teaching you basic shit about cars? Did you just begin driving when you purchased your Acura in 2016?

The kid is not some child mechanic prodigy. It takes 60 seconds on google to diagnose common mechanical issues. Tire rotation is even easier

And the cream on top of all of this is “fuck Acura” . Lmao. Every dealership will take you for the fool you are man, it’s not Acura, you’re just clueless and too lazy to read your own owners manual and google what might potentially need servicing during each interval

Tire rotation is usually free when you get some other work done. But servicing the brakes (i.e.cleaning and greasing calipers) is quite necessary with our salty winters. Otherwise you can get a seized caliper (only one of the two pads make contact) and squealing noises. Again it's doable yourself with a few tools.

You only need to rotate your tires if the fronts are worn more than the rears or vise versa. Re-balancing need only be done if you detect a vibration.

Charging you to fill your tires with nitrogen is another scam. Free air works just fine.

It seems that the dealerships make most of their money from after sales service which forces them to be often "creative" in their recommendations. Service advisors are often replaced if they cannot meet monthly quotas. Tire rotation is useful is some cases, especially on front wheel drive vehicles. Nitrogen changes less in volume with temperature . than air, and with the GTA ranging from -20C to 34 C this could be useful. My nitrogen refills are free. Hopefully the service advice is ultimately in the customer's interest rather than the dealerships bottom line. Always cheapskates will question and fight against service advice and unscrupulous dealerships will push for services which are questionable. Happy mediums are rare. Acura makes very good cars which require less after sales service than most other models so that the service department has to be cunning to survive.

It helps a great deal to be knowledgeable about your vehicle.
Tire rotation is necessary since the front tires will wear differently than the rears especially if it’s a front wheel drive car and/or you corner aggressively. Rotation only needs to occur when the wear is uneven.
The service at dealerships is “recommended” and not mandatory. They recommend it (erring on the side of extreme conservatism”. It’s up to you to decide yes or no. That’s not the dealership’s fault ... it’s yours if you said yes to it. The service advisor is obligated to offer the service by the manufacturer. It’s their job.
Your dentist recommends you get your teeth scaled and cleaned every 6 months. Some people need it more often some less often ... again that’s your call.

If you don't want to pay for rotation or balancing, buy your tires at Costco. Not only do you usually get a better price, they give you lifetime road hazard warranty, rotation and balancing for life of the tires and nitrogen. Yes nitrogen does have benefits over regular air (less heat build up, heat is the biggest enemy of a tire. And if you get a nail it leaks slower than air) but it is not necessary. All included in the $15 install package, unless the price went up since last summer.

All you have to do is ask Costco to rebalance and/or rotate. Which brings up another issue .... good luck getting your car in without an appointment, forget it during busy spring/fall tire change times. It used to be you could drop the car when you did your shopping at Costco, seems these days there is rarely a slow time you can just pop in.

Who told you that nitrogen changes less in volume than air with temperature? BS! Did you ever study gas laws in high school? And air is 79 % nitrogen to begin with.

High school and University studies that I did indicate the N2 gas obeys the Ideal Gas Law while air does not. It is not a big deal riding on air or nitrogen just that air changes more with the GTA temperature ranges than does N2. One could just add air or let out air as required with the ambient temperature. The idea with N2 is that tire pressure adjustments would have to be done less frequently, sort of an all season consistent tire pressure. However whatever one chooses to fill their tires with, tire pressure should still be routinely checked for leaks etc.
I probably would not pay for N2 if my dealership did not do it for free.

All premium models cost a premium price if you're incapable of doing basic maintenance.

Lol who goes to the dealer to have their car diagnosed? Unless you bought it brand new from them...you're a walking ATM as soon as you walk in. If your car is newly bought from the same dealer. You don't need any "extra service" unless it's out of warranty. Get yourself a trust worthy independent mechanic (there are lots). And yeah brake jobs are fun! I remember going for an oil change back in the day and as soon as I came back the mechanic told me my pads are done and need them replaced. I told them I didn't asked for it. My brakes were good when I drove it to their shop. But just for shits n giggles I asked them how much and it's a whopping $600 for all...I pay my mechanic $300 and that includes oil change and alignment.

The perceived value that we realize when we pay to get ripped off or jacked off is very subjective. I try to educate myself about my vehicle as much as I can and try to follow a maintenance schedule for best results. My dick is another matter all together.
