I noticed this on the 570 news website, thought it might be worth discussing:
Prostitution charges up in Kitchener
Monday, August 25, 2008 - 05:23 AM 570 News
Prostitution charges dropped in cities across Ontario but not in Kitchener.
It's one of 9 cities that saw charges rise. In the last two months 34 men have been arrested by Waterloo Regional police in stings in Kitchener and Cambridge.
Prostitution charges dropped by 24 per cent province wide. Lawyer Alan Young thinks those charges have dropped due to police focusing their law enforcement to more serious crimes like drugs and gun violence.
But Ottawa police Staff Sgt. Terry Welsh thinks diversion programs, such as "john school,'' which sees those charged with soliciting a prostitute moved out of the criminal system and into education programs, are likely a factor in the drop in charges. Waterloo Regional Police also offer a "john school" option.
