Can anyone tell me if statistically being a police officer in Toronto any more more dangerous than being a construction worker in Toronto.
Here is a back-of-the-envelope style of estimate for you. This uses RCMP stats as a proxy for TPS, or any other Canadian police department.

RCMP:
  • 30,000 members
  • 2 killed on duty per year. Long term or short term average = same
  • so . . . 1 fatality per 15,000 man-years

All of Canadian workforce:
  • 15,000,000 workers
  • 1,000 on the job fatalities per year
  • so . . . 1 fatality per 15,000 man-years

My takeaway:
  • Policing in Canada is about as safe as the average job
  • However, the average is misleading as some jobs - mining, forestry, fishing, construction, etc - are hugely more dangerous
  • The myth that "the police put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe" comes from Hollywood, not reality

PS: Full respect to Constable Northrup, killed on duty yesterday.

Should have filled out their TPS reports with a proper cover sheet. I guess someone didn't get the memo?

Not sure why you would say that.
I guarantee he will be in jail for a long time.
We’ll see who’s right.

The public's opinion of construction workers is not being coerced by main stream media the way it is with police officers though.

Has to be hard to wear blue these days.

I'm sure there won't be any protests over this killing...........
Construction workers don't go around killing/murdering, assaulting/maiming for life, fabricating evidence/perjuring themselves at anywhere near the rate of the poor persecuted men in blue.

Nonsense. There was no edit of the original post.
Show me where it says "edited" in my posts.

If you do an edit pretty much within a few minutes of what you had originally posted, the edit message does not appear on the bottom right.

"Within a few minutes" is really quick.

Anyway, there were no edits of any of my posts in this thread. Another poster, I suspect accidentally, misquoted me.

Edit: I went back and checked the timeline. My original post was 5:31PM on Friday. The other member's post that misquoted my post was at 8:36AM on Sunday.

93.6 of voters in a poll are upset Trudeau is/was silent over this. I can't stand him.

Justin Trudeau oddly silent on Toronto cop's line of duty death

The death of Toronto Police Const. Jeff Northup on the job early Friday has prompted police services – both across the country and around the world – politicians, and people from all walks of life to offer condolences on social media.
But one person who’s been noticeably absent in the Northup tributes is Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Granted he could have offered his condolences privately to the Northup family and we don’t know.

But publicly, the optics aren’t great.

So what has the PM been tweeting about? A lot. Just not Northup.

On Saturday it was about pollution.

“Cutting pollution and getting to net-zero is ambitious, but it’s possible and it’s necessary,” he partially tweeted Saturday noonish.

Friday night, it was the Habs game.

“Back on home ice. Let’s do this, @CanadiensMTL. #GoHabsGo #StanleyCup,” he tweeted.

On Friday, it was the B.C. wildfires, including the devastating Lytton one.

“I’ve spoken with Mayor Polderman and Acting Chief Haugen about the wildfire that devastated Lytton on Wednesday. I told them both that the federal government stands ready to assist – and will provide them with the support they need to rebuild. We are here for you.”

Also, Friday, COVID-19 vaccinations.

“Make sure you get your second dose when you can,” Trudeau partially tweeted. “I got mine today, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the health care workers who’ve made this all possible.”

And finally, the Middle East, also on Friday.

“On the phone today, @KingAbdullahII and I spoke about a number of common priorities – including promoting peace and security in the Middle East, combatting violent extremism and hatred, and strengthening the partnership between Canada and Jordan.”

At least Bill Blair, Trudeau’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, and the former Toronto Chief of Police, added his voice to the chorus of condolences sent by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Toronto Mayor John Tory, and countless others.

“It is with profound sadness that we learn of the death of
@TorontoPolice Constable Jeffrey Northrup, killed in the line of duty while protecting his City,” tweeted Blair on Friday.

“My deepest sympathies to his family, and to his Toronto Police colleagues. We share your grief and mourn the tragic loss of a friend who died in service to his community.”

Zameer's defence is he didnt know it was a cop.
The dead police officer was wearing regular street clothes and Zameer thought he was being carjacked.
Zameer was with his family and had never been in trouble with the law before until this incident.
This happened a couple of months after the Veltman murders in London, Ont.
Sounds like he might have a case

Very interesting case as more information is made known.

Why would an accountant with his wife and child deliberately run over someone whether he was a cop or not? Looks like the defence is going after the credibility of the other officer who is the only other witness that she had been found guilty of misappropriation of charity funds and later returned it.

It's not so much the amount of time between when the post appears, and when it's edited, that matters. The edit message at bottom right will appear if the displayed page has been changed or refreshed between posting and editing, and possibly if there have been subsequent posts in between the actions. That's been my experience from doing frequent edits of brand new posts, often for font and/ or formatting changes, or minor spelling/ grammar changes.

Thats really gonna hurt her testimony (as it should).
She claims they identified themselves a cops, but jury might not believe her now

If you look at what the deceased officer is wearing I can see how Zameer might think its a carjacking.
Mask, short baggy pants, what looks like tattoos on his legs, dirty baseball cap.......etc.

That is an interesting side to the story. I can see it.

Just because someone walks up to me and says they are police, doesn’t mean it is true.

Show a badge or expected to be treated like a threat.
Also defendant was trying to protect his family as Veltman killed that Muslim family a month before by running them down with car.

Problem with that theory is the woman police officer identifying herself by holding her badge to the car window.

Her credibility though.
She was previously found guilty of misappropriation of charity funds and had to return the money.
Lets see if her approach to the car with her badge drawn shows up on security video
