If Canada can strike a deal with the US where we have a North-American Union just like they have in the EU, would you be in favor of that??

Benefits would be US citizenship (without the right to vote in the US).
You become instantly 30% richer (US exchange rate).
Possibly lower taxes.

Here's how it might work:

- Canada, the US, and Mexico become one Union.
- All 3 countries share the same currency.
- All 3 countries would still keep their name and their same government system.
- People of all 3 countries can work in all 3 countries, but they can only vote in their own country.
- Canada would keep its healthcare system and gun control laws.
- We could get rid of customs, or we could keep them (some EU countries still have border control).
- All 3 countries would keep their legal systems (for example, no death penalty or overly harsh sentences).

I'd rather CANZUK -- a free trade and movement between Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand -- go through. These are countries we have a shared history with and things in common. Second would be EU membership.

I want absolutely nothing to do with that country of disgusting fat swine to the south of us, or with Mexico, a country of cartels and bandits.

If we use the same currency, we wouldn't become richer.
We'd just have lesser US dollars since CAD is weaker.
Taxes in Canada are not very different from the US and if we are to keep healthcare, then it is not going to be lower.
I wouldn't want citizenship without the right to vote, but I don't want Americans to be able to vote in Canada either.
So I guess that just leaves the right to work in 3 countries.
We can just expand NAFTA and make that possible instead of a union.
So I do not see a point of a union.

If our next PM is smart he will negotiate a deal where all our Canadian dollars automatically become US dollars once we form a Union.
So if you have $1,000 CDN in the bank, that now becomes $1,000 USD.
Same with every other asset you own

Phil, I can see how that would work for a 60 year old with a large RRSP and no mortgage, but what about a 30 year old couple with essentially no savings and a million dollar mortgage?

Unless I'm missing something, nothing would change for them.
Their paycheque would just be in US dollars instead of CDN dollars, and their monthly mortgage payment would remain unchanged

I very much doubt that would happen
If a economic union deal were to negotiated an exchange date would be set and CAD would be converted @ the market determined CAD/USD rate on that date

if Trump is unable to shrink the size of govt and eliminate the deficits the USD could become worthless inside of 10-20 years

That said the loonie is on the same pathway should Carney become an elected PM

there are a lot of Pros and Cons to consider that...I'm sure the EU also did the same and came to vote for it to happen...
looking at the replies...
the liberals are "laser focused" on one thing...
"no way because of orange man"
Had Barrack offered that...they'd be fawning at the idea...

This isn't a "liberals bs conservatives" thing -- it's a common sense thing. There's nothing we can gain through such a relationship. I eagerly await your laughing emoji since you seem unable to formulate any sort of rational argument.

YOu make Trumps statement look mild...
Trump - "they are only sending us the criminals"

You - " Mexico, a country of cartels and bandits."

Tell me you have no idea how money works without telling me. I've got personal experience with this one:

Theoretically, you transfer to [new currency] at a fixed exchange rate, but your prices come down because you are paying in [new currency]

Practically, if something was 10 Canadian Dollars, it just gets changed to 10 US dollars, as happened in Italy with the Euro.

And right now US food prices in US dollars are HIGHER than Canadian prices in Canadian dollars.

So, you'd be reducing your available dollars by 30%, AND increasing the cost of living. And for what? More oligarchs? We should be working to break up companies owned by the Westons, Irvings, and Thompsons, not trying to make more of them.

First, this is not like the EU at all. They did not lose their citizenship or anything like that. If it were more like the EU, there is a possibility I would support it. However, I think it would need to be bigger than just Canada, US and Mexico.

If it were something like this, maybe:

  • Unified currency. Does not need to be the US dollar, can be a new one, like the Euro.
  • Canada and Mexico keep their sovereignty and people retain their citizenship.
  • I'm not sure how the governance system would be set up, but it couldn't be the US deciding everything. Would it be similar to the US Senate, where every state gets two votes?
  • I'm cool to a EU-style of customs (or lack of them).

This is something that could work. However, in the current climate, I doubt Mexico or Canada would even entertain talks with Trump (the master negotiator ). I do think this could be something that happens in the future. Again, it would not be Canada becoming a state, but a deeper economic partnership is feasible.

I do support a single currency but other than that I'd say no.

That's correct, Europeans did not lose their citizenship, but they did get a new EU citizenship and passport (I know this because I have one).

I would like to same type of deal with the US, where we keep our Canadian citizenship, but we have a common passport
